Is that just regular Astro-Turf?
No, it really is nothing like regular astro turf.
The major league baseball team here has it in the dome and it's really nice.

Plays much like grass and maybe even a lil softer.
Then again, it will play slower than astro turf.
Expect many fewer injuries.

It even behaves like grass in the fact that you can get that alternating dark green like green look by just sweeping it in different directions.

There ya go....
Clay
I want to say it's Field Turf, which is what NIU put in before last year. It's turf blades a couple inches long and the "dirt" is ground up recycled car tires. There is a good deal of give to it, it doesn't require a crown due to the good drainage system, and is 100 times better than the old astroturf. NIU had more ankle injuries (not necessarily serious ones) than in the past, so there is still a question about how it affects the players' bodies compared to astroturf, but everyone I've heard talk about it after a few games said it was the best thing since sliced bread. The lines and logos can be weaved into the turf (NIU used white and red turf blades to spell HUSKIES in each end zone). And it does, to some degree, look like grass.
It's not NexTurf, is it? We put NexTurf in the Glass Bowl last year. Looks a lot like real grass.
Looks great compared to the crappy rug that they installed at KSU back in 1997. I really wish that they had installed something like this. Oh well, maybe in another 30 years they will get around to some improvements at Dix...like hot water and working toilets in the bathrooms.
The one thing I thought was nice about Pedan is that they had PAT. Now it's gone. Is Miami and UCF the only MAC schools left with natural grass? Sad.
Doyt Perry Stadium has a crowned grass field.

The deal with Peden was this: The contractor that installed the PAT field (allegedly) ripped them off. It was (allegedly) a horrible job and the field had (allegedly) turned into a pile of mush by the end of the season.

So they threw up their hands and installed the blady, life like artificial turf.

I've seen and walked on this stuff at an indoor soccer complex in one of our suburbs here. From the stands, I doubt anyone will even notice it isn't grass. The only thing I noticed was a slightly bad chemical smell, but I doubt that would be an issue outdoors.

I believe the substance is Field Turf. The draninage system was a mess in Peden, and it was leaking, being so close to the Hocking River.

The faulty drainage situation was a result of poor job done by the Contractor of the Peden renovation last year. A portion of the Contractor's payment was withheld by the University because of the screw up. The payment was used toward the installation of the new artificial surface in Peden.

When the brainstorming for the Peden expansion was taking place years ago, Field Turf was yet too "unproven" in terms of durability, injury likelyhood, for the Ohio Athletic Department to consider installing it. Since that time, Field Turf has proven itself, thus making it a solid playing surface canidate for Peden Stadium.

Its too costly to re-do the drainage system in Peden, so the AD and Coach Knorr thought Field Turf would be the best option.

But it's good stuff.
Turf sucks period...it RUINS the whole charm of your stadium and imo any others stick with the real deal

I totally forgot about Ball State! So I guess, that makes four natural grass fields: BSU, BGSU, Miami, and CFU. Although I'm not certain about Buffalo.

Can you believe Western ripped out the artificial turf back in the early 90's only to replace it again with Nexturf several years later? I agree with Heymon, it totally wrecks the charm of the stadium!

They hate it when they're called CFU

Thanks Rocket. Obviously I don't proofread my copy before I post -- note that my html didn't work out too well either! I'll have to take advantage of the UBB code! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" />
Interesting to note that Knorr had some input on the choice of playing surface..given that he had no apparent effect on the team's play in his first year (other than negative, that is).

How many victories does it take to preserve Knorr's job? A 12 game schedule--Does 5, a fivefold improvement, do it? That would make him 6-18 over his first two years. Speaking of ground, would that mark him as a coach on the rise or just another in an almost continuous (not Grobe) line of unproductive head coaches at The Ohio University?...We averaged about 20k per game at newly rebuilt Peden last year. Coming off of last year's debacle and with a rather unattractive home sched we could see some serious decrease in attendance.
I do believe Buffalo has grass. I've been there. I think I would have remembered turf.
Rf is correct...Buffalo is grass also.

I love natural grass although this Nexturf stuff seems so much better than AT---turf sux...
