"BUGS is my gut choice, but Urban still has a lot to prove as a coach. He inherited a pretty damn good team last year".

Umm....we were 2-9 in 2000...

I just read Phil Steele's. He seems to be under the impression that the Falcon schedule is tough, and that the Falcons would have a hard time winning eight games this year.

I don't see it. The Falcons beat Missouri last year, and Missouri is, arguably, the toughest team on the schedule this year.

Besides, his magazine kind of stinks.
Falconfreak: I'm guessing that quote should have said that Urban inherited a talented team, not a good one. Can't really argue with that!

Pinkel won't lose to BG again. In fact, he'll have his boys ready to eat nails.

You know, the kind of football his last Rockets team played against the Pumpkin Patch kids. He shouldn't have much trouble motivating them.
Pinkel brought with him, 2 freshman QB recruits that were originally going to attend UT. They both redshirted last year, and are battling that Farmer guy (senior) for the starting position this year. They are both supposed to be Tavares Bolden type players.

Pinkel is already starting to turn that program around. People in the Big 12 are talking about Missouri possibly making a bowl game this year.

And last year people on the Missouri board were complaining that MU had hired another hot-shot coach that would do nothing. Were all those Big 12 posters scouting spring drills to change their minds?
Pinkel is a good coach and has an eye for talent. Missouri will improve and I am concerned about them. But, this analysis is truly lame.

JASON WHITLOCK:
Missouri looks hapless in Pinkel's debut

By JASON WHITLOCK - Columnist
Date: 09/01/01 23:59

COLUMBIA -- Bowling Green dominated Gary Pinkel's Missouri Tigers on Faurot Field on Saturday night.

Had Falcons coach Urban Meyer stuck with the right quarterback throughout the contest, the Tigers would have been blown out. Instead, Bowling Green, Mid-American Conference low-lifes and winners of just two games a year ago, settled for a 20-13 victory.

Perhaps Meyer took pity on Pinkel and tried not to totally humiliate the former MAC coach of the year in his debut as Missouri's main man. Or maybe the Tigers are just this bad. Maybe the 2001 Tigers will go down as one of the worst Missouri football teams ever.

[as we know, the Tigers didn't go down in history as that bad. For more...]

What a "woe is me" article that is! That's the national bull$hit that pisses me off about perceptions about the MAC. Come one - BG WAS a lousy team the year before, and that's all at that point that Whitlock had to compare them to, but that was baloney. MU might not win another game all season?? Sheesh.
Hey, I hope BG beats 'em again, but to make it out as the end of the world in the coach's first game - damn, that ain't right! Same thing happened with Joe Tiller - got beat by Toledo - and they've turned out alright.
HuskieDan: No kidding! Elitist BCS, I mean BS. Wonder what he was thinking after the end of last season?
Heck, not even so much the BCS BS elitism as some high-falootin' big city writer (yeah, Kansas City - RIGHT!!) who pulls at least 3 Chicken Little articles out of his arse weekly. It's the Jay Mariotti/TJ Simers school of sports journalism, which says that minus a world title won in the last week, RIP 'EM!!!

Whitlock has probably been writing all summer about the Rams' imminent demise due to letting Az Hakim go in the spring.....

O.K. BG scares the heck out of me! Marshall, how high does a football scoreboard go? But, as for the rest, bring them on! Let the games begin!! The CARDS should be tougher than it has been since 1996 when it last won the MAC!!!

Good line, good running game, not a bad passing game either. Good group of linebackers and defensive backs - not so sure about the defensive line though.

All in all, a good year in the making for the CARDS. Anywhere from 9-3 or maybe 7-5. It's going to be fun in Muncie this fall!!!

OK, my heart says CMU, but my head says BGSU.

(I've got to get these voices in my head to stop)

A month ago you were predicting 8-4. I figure by Labor Day you'll have us penciled in at 11-1 and playing in Huntington for the MAC championship!
It will also be Urban's 2nd year and this team is in great shape. Pinkel is a very solid coach but he ain't gonna beat us in our house. And I see Ball State giving Mizzou a run for the $$$ in Columbia...I remember a couple years ago the Cards played very well in the Swamp against Fla...
Ball St will be a solid team in 2002.

Pinkel has a ton of work to do to get the Tigers to an "elite" status. Tigers go no better than
5-7 in 2002...imho.
I root for all MAC teams, and that includes BG. As much as I really liked Gary Pinkel and wish him well at Mizlou, I will be rooting for the Falcons. In fact, BG can and should win all four OOC games quite easily if they play like they did aganst N'western and Toledo last year.

As for the MAC West, I predict there will be 1.5 game difference between the #1 team and the #5 team. Take your pick between NIU, BSU, BG, Toledo & WMU. Also, CMU is my mystery team that may come out of the bottom and make a serious contention this year in the West while Akron is my mystery team from the East to do some damage and upset some contenders if they can survive an early brutal schedule.
