That's the reported attendence of the VPI-WMU game, according to yahoo.com I think that's as disappointing as the loss.

Man, if MAC teams can even get 30,000 for games against top-caliber competition, I guess we never will. (Oops, doesn't WMU always have over 30,000 in their rivalry against CMU? Must be the presence of the Chippewa fans! )
This surprises me as it looked completely full on ESPN when they switched over to the game late in the first half.......had to be demoralizing for WMU to be only down 3-0 with a couple minutes to play in the half, (having outgained V-Tech by quite a bit), only to find themselves down 16-zip at the half.
I hereby promise not to make any more attendance predictions for WMU for the remainder of the season. The wonderful residents of Kalamazoo must be too drawn to their televisions to catch a such a marquee opponent (lots of students there, though). This is why I rarely criticize other schools' attendance figures. Who knows what would happen with our attendance figures if WMU's record really hit the skids.

You hit the nail on the head eCK. You could tell the atmosphere in the stadium was totally deflated after the fumble returned for a TD. Thanks to Drach for waving the football around like a loaf of bread. Down 3-0 with 2 minutes to go, then down 16-0 with less than a minute to go. Ouch.

On the positive side, the highly touted Hokie backfield of Suggs and Jones hardly did anything against the Broncos defensive line today. It was like the Broncos rush-defense of 2000 was out there. I think Heisman candidate Suggs earned 48 yards on the ground. But their QB, Randall, acheived quite a number of yards against us, both on the ground and through the air. Our secondary looked quite suspect, which is unsettling.

And not too surprisingly, we missed two field goals today.

Having said all that, I'm somewhat glad our 2003 schedule is a bit less intimidating than this year, with Michigan State and UConn on the road, and Virginia home.
Motown,
Just wondering if the game was shown locally in Kalamazoo??
Yes, it was. I don't think the Kalamazoo community gave us chance in hell. Our defense held strong -- even with 3 turnovers in the first half. VT had excellent field position all day long.

On a side note, we actually outgained the Hokies in the first half. The turnover just before halftime took all the wind out of our sails. We'll be ready for MAC play. This team is hungry.
I watched the whole game.

Despite the score, I thought WMU played VT much better than Marshall.

You just can't turn the ball over time after time and beat a team like VT. You guys dodged a number of bullets in the first half, but that fumble return for a TD at the end of the first half was a game-breaker.
Hokie fans finally realized what I was telling them after the effort our defense put in and allow only 23 of the 30 points. That is, Marshall has no defense and just because they have a great quarterback, they are not a true indicator of what a MAC team is like. A MAC team is a combination of Marshall's offense and WMU's defense, sort of like Bowling Green right now.

I think he's saying that Bowling Green is the best team in the MAC.

Right now, it's hard to disagree with that.

The lack of a sell-out at WMU with a top 5 opponent in town made ESPN radio Saturday afternoon. The commentators (with obvious sarcasm) stated that WMU team ownership should consider moving their team out of Kalamazoo. There may be other communities in Western Michigan that could pull in more people.

After UB's loss to Ohio, though, I'm sure not about to comment. We'll be lucky to draw 10,000 per game for the rest of the season. WMU should feel confident about their upcoming game against UB. Regardless of any WMU turnovers, UB seems to spot each team 4 touchtowns before deciding to play.

They are averaging 32.33 ppg while Toledo is averaging 37.40 ppg.

I know you will say that Toledo hasn't played anybody, but 2 of the 5 teams we have played are ranked in the Top 16 in total defense and ranked in the Top 19 in scoring defense. Only 1 of Marshall's opponents are in the Top 16 and Top 19 respectively so don't waste your time trying to defend yourself.
Not offering excuses but the tix for the game were up to $30.00 Each compared to the approx.18-19 they are normally. Many thought it would be a big blow out and didn't expect us to stay in it as long as we did.
Klingon,

I hope your team up there can turn the corner soon. I think they will with a little time and recruiting. Also, it's great having a UB fan's perspective on the board.

I did read a long-range weather report that says it's supposed to be windy, and possibly wet, this weekend in Buffalo. That may have some negative effect on our passing game.

The attendance for VT was truly disappointing. One can only speculate the reasons why we've drawn more for Indiana State, Youngstown State, Temple, etc, in the past several years. Maybe it's because for the first time in years, we're coming off a losing season, and now we are seeing the effect of the bandwagoners jumping ship.

I think klordway may be correct in that a few thousand people may have been too "afraid" to spend $30 in a game they perceived would be essentially 'over' by the second quarter. I'm not condoning or defending it, but it could be a reason. Maybe the crowds will be better next year for the tough - but less than stellar and certainly beatable - Virginia Cavaliers. But after these past couple home games, I'm not gonna make any more promises regarding our home attendance anymore. I've overestimated them badly so far this year.
We're certainly having trouble in the red zone thus far this season, but a quick glance at "total offense" stats from NCAA.org will lead you to the promise land.

A million yards at the end of the VT game still crushed our hopes for this season and I don't think anyone realized how much we depended on that game. I think we have great potential but we are still short of what's possible. I see that on every 80 yard drive that fails to score and there have been a lot.
"That's the most ridiculous comment I've ever heard. You think the MAC is a combination of one of the most potent offenses in the country and a solid "D"?"

That is exactly what BG is right now...I am obviously biased but here are some numbers to run by you...

As a team, the Falcons are third in the country in rush defense (60.6), fourth in scoring offense (43.7), sixth in punting (40.5), eighth in total offense (469.3), and ninth in rushing offense (232.0). Courtesy of bgsufalcons.com

Some will say we haven't played anybody yet...But we still smashed 2 Big 12 teams and gained over 500 yrds vs. both.

BG is seriously clicking with Coach Meyer's system...and the d, which many thought would drop off due to 7 starters graduating, is just as good.
If we can continue to play at the level we have, an undefeated season is not out of the question. I feel with 3 more wins we will be ranked in the Top 25. We are getting 18 votes in the USA Today/ESPN poll and 7 in the AP poll...
Hey, it's great to see Falcon Football back to the level we expect it to be.
GO FALCONS!! BEAT OHIO!!!

Wow.
Undefeated? Last time I heard that was in Orlando before the season started.

You have to score the points if you want to win. That is... well half of Toledo's problem against Pitt. 1 fumble, an Interception, and a dropped pass on 4th in the red zone by our offense killed us. Not as badly as our defense did though.
