Every Wednesday the back cover page of the Trib Sports is devoted to college football (called College football Plus). Today's feature is on the Falcons, along with a large pic of Urban Meyer.

I'm sure one of our more computer literate can post the article for all to enjoy, but it's a very positive article about BG and the MAC, and of course notes that Meyer is one "hot property" among young coaches now, and is already rumored to take over the MSU job in the near future. It also mentions a $9 Million renovation of BG athletic facilties, and Meyer notes that if they go through with it it might be hard for him to leave the program. 04-cheers
Well, the ALL say that stuff--right up to the day they leave to take the major conference job. Then they say their tearful goodbyes, and the next day are high-5-ing their new AD and players talking the same loyalty crap to them. Show me the MAC coach that never accepts that 5x salary increase...

Yeah, but it's universal. Look at Butch Davis' exit from UCG.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...who wouldn't "jump" at the opportunity to do the same job, with better conditions, more support, and 5-10 times the money? Who could blame Meyer if he took the MSU job?
I sure can't throw stones, cause given the opportunity to quintuple your money, quintuple the quality of your facilities and recruiting budget and have a legit shot at a national title in a BCS conference (which is supposed to be the holy grail in college football, right?), I'd take it too!!

My problem here is that.....it's the CHICAGO Tribune, and who is the feature? Bowling Green. Not the tied-for-first local NIU Huskies.....no, that would make sense.

Meyer isn't leaving this year. Mark my words.
There's also a nice piece on BG at cbs.sportsline.com.

I heard the Trib sent their local guy to cover WIU. Go figure.
I'm not saying they shouldn't jump either--just that you are naive if you listen to them talking about how they intend to stay for the long haul and don't see any job they want more than the one they have etc. blah blah blah.
Of course it is human nature to want to improve your lot.
Mark MY words: Meyer will go as soon as he is offered that big-time position. If MSU comes calling this year and puts the contract in front of him, he won't turn it down. That's because BG may lose early next year, may lose often next year and then there will be no offers. Coaches know they don't get unlimited chances to grab the brass ring.

When Ark. got Stan Heath last year, Heath knew it was now or when next? Ark got a guy who proved some things about his coaching ability, but as a first year head coach, is still really unproven in many ways. They got a pig in a poke--pun intended. :D
But that's the game in big time coaching.

That will depend on how BG finishes and who comes a'calling. Nebraska and MSU are two very high profile jobs that will be open after this season. There will be others, as well. There will also be fallout as those teams take coaches from elsewhere. If BG finishes undefeated, Meyer may even end up in one of the very high profile gigs. Personally, I'll be very surprised if you're correct.

And this actually makes it worse - the morons from BG don't even READ the Trib and they get a big feature.

At least if you read the paper you'd know that NIU has barely this year gotten out of the "Illinois schools" summary and has the venerable Bill Jauss covering our games.
No worries Huskie Dan. Coverage does not win games. Games are won on the field. BG is a good story even though they have yet to beat a team with a winning record. I say keep pumping those guys up. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Not all of the coverage goes elsewhere, we were on Chicago TV last night. Also, the guys on the Score were mentioning our game with BG yesterday. That's almost two weeks before kickoff. We'll be fine. We'll beat BG and there will be a big article in the paper!

From the article,
"And it can't be any more of a shock than how the once run-first, run-second, run-third program is suddenly airing it out all over Ohio, or how Bowling Green beat Western Michigan a couple weeks ago despite missing nine starters due to injury "

That says alot to me. Everyone is working hard, and this team is developing the depth it needs to compete on a high level.

I read the Trib when I lived in IL. But who cares after Royko died?

Anyway, stop your sob story. BG can't even get coverage in the Lima (OH) News. Lima is as close to BG as Chicago is to DeKalb, only what the hell does the Lima News have to write about?

I want NIU to do well, but you guys did hold your own fate in your hands when you lost to WIU and UW. Win those games (and the UW game was a tough break, I appreciate that) and you'd be getting headlines.

Frankly, those wins could have meant a huge boon in recruiting, especially if Alvarez leaves.
The Lima Snooze writes about what it has always written about--Ohio State and high schools.
Ohio Northern gets better coverage than BG in the LN. But then again, except for a few BG grads, why would Lima care about a college in a town smaller than itself an hour's drive away?
It's been said before here--BG is in a dead zone, mediawise. How does the local paper cover it? That's about all you can expect.
You are dead on about those two games. We gave UW the game, not the officials - 3 critical turnovers, and WIU just came in and beat us - they were hungrier than we were, just like we were hungrier than UW.

But you're talking about the Lima paper (sorry I don't know this, but they are what? The Press? The Gazette? The Times-Mail? The Rag? ) not THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE, one of the largest circulation papers in America and, to the best of my limited knowledge, the only paper that owns a major league baseball team. They're pretty well known in more than just NE Ohio.

OK, I know BG got this piece because they're the current midmajor darling, not because the Trib chose BG over NIU for the MAC team to write an article about. But it IS symptomatic of Chicago press in relation to NIU - too many people already think NIU is just another state school like WIU, SIU, ISU, EIU, and doing a big feature on our currently biggest opponent when the damn paper usually gives the MAC SQUAT is irking. Imagine the Lima Rag sent a reporter to Buffalo to do a full page story about the Bulls and quoting their coach as saying how much it will help Buffalo recruit in BG's back yard. Yeah, thanks for nothing....

No, the morons don't even give the final story! They didn't even put the state championship results on their web site!

Congrats to Spencerville's two 5th place finishes. The boys went against a buzzsaw team that won. That team would have placed well in any division.
