Great MAC game ruined by MAC officials, imagine that. Calling MAC officials third rate high school crews is unfair to the abilities of third rate high school crews.
I think I've seen this before though, the 2 pass interference calls handing the game to the home team...
Oh yeah...that was this year in Madison when the Huskie game was handed to the Badgers on a platter.

If those officials aren't somehow disciplined after this... I really feel for the Miami fans! That's two games this season taken away by the zebras. :(

Right on Motown. A gift just given to Marshall! I think it's time for a poll. Pass interference? No way. What a joke! I want to vomit right now.
However, I blame Hoeppner for the loss. He had no confidence in that last offensive series. If I had a quaterback like Ben, I would have played for the win instead of playing not to lose.

Even Mrs Freak could see what a load of crap those "penalties" were!
I can't begin to imagine how Terry Hoeppner feels right now...I'd be on the phone all night to Rick Chryst if necessary.
Herd fans...I wonder why you guys are now 47-1 there in that stadium under Pruett...hmmmmm?
Miami won that game...period. The officials took it away and handed it to you....Enjoy the early Christmas present.

Actually, the refs did a pretty good job for almost the entire game. Unfortunately, a the end they got "caught up" in the moment, which almost always benefits the home team.
The first call (on the 4th down), was kind of close with the Miami defender's left arm on him. On the other hand, the Marshall receiver was leaning in, plus where the ball was thrown, I believe no call shoud have been made.
The second call was downright awful. While one might argue it would not have had a bearing (since the clock would have stopped on the incomplete pass), it gave Marshall an extra yard and a half on the penalty, which was less than what the QB got in on the touchdown.
However, Motown Bronco got it right. In the last few minutes, Miami played not to lose, rather than to win! I'm not saying to try any crazy plays, but two runs up the middle, followed by an eight yard loss? Pitiful! Keep running the plays that got you going in the first place. Just don't go out of bounds, or pass more than once. That way Marshall would have had only one timeout left rather than zero. Not much difference there, as the clock stops for Marshall on first downs and incomplete passes.
Then Miami decides to play "prevent defense". What that usually does is prevent you from winning. Further, I've never understood why you don't go ahead and put a couple of fresh defensive linemen in at this stage of the game? Finally, did you notice the Miami lineman on the last play of the game.. the one who was jumped at the line of scrimmage when the QB faked the pass? Too bad he reacted in that situation instead of realizing he had little chance of deflecting the pass from such a long distance away. If he doesn't jump, the QB would have been contained.
Some final thoughts. I must say this was a GREAT game, one that any college football fan should have appeciated. Marshall and Miami did the MAC proud! The announcer's even mentioned this was one of the better games they broadcasted this year. Finally, good luck to the Herd and Miami, too. The Redhawks need to realize their season is NOT over! They need to win their last game against UCF to go to 8-4 and be a top at-large pick should a league not meet their bowl fulfillments.
Once again, great game!!

Good post, Okie. There was slight contact before the ball on the second PI call, but it was a ticky-tack hanky. The first one, no way was that PI. The receiver initiated contact.

Chippies: I hope refs don't decide THE RIVILARY game like this in two weeks. At least we have one thing we can agree upon.

I usually don't comment on officials - but since this game did not involve any team I pull for - or any school I attended, I feel free to post a comment about this game's officiating here.
The way that the officials decided the game (a phantom pass interference - called in the endzone - on a 4th down play - benefitting the home team) was about as obvious a case of home-cooking by officials as I have seen in quite some time. This makes a well played game between 2 conference powers look like a snapshot from a Texas league game - where politics determine who wins and by what means. I'm not saying it was Marshall's fault (it isn't) - but it makes us (the entire MAC) look like a bush league.
Since it was 4th down, Marshall had no time outs left and there was only a few seconds left in the game - that game was won on the field by Miami(OH). Marshall's administration, AD's office or football coach ought to make things right by immediately forfeiting the game - since we know conference offices never rectify these types of problems - they only occasionally admit a mistake was made.
Then, for the officials to follow it up with another phantom pass interference call was more than anyone ought to have to endure over an entire game - much less two consecutive plays in the final seconds of a close game. The second bad call made the option of a QB run viable - where it would not have been otherwise.
Marshall played a great game - but the 2002 squad's record will always have an asterisk in my stat book.

This is a bit more minor... but, as someone on the Virginia Tech message board pointed out, how did Marshall also escape a celebration penalty after the TD? It was a mob scene, and the game wasn't over yet.

It won't happen. CMU will have a big enough lead by the 4th quarter that the refs won't have an impact...
