Full Version: nothing more for the Herd to prove in the MAC

We have proven our point in the MAC by winning it 5 of 6 years........no else in HISTORY has ever accomplished such a feat......there is nothing more to do here.......we have our revenge on Toledo now that we all so desperately wanted, and what else is there to prove in the MAC? CUSA DOESNT HAVE TO BE FOREVER.......please guys realize this, they would be a sort of a stepping stone into one of the true power conferences.......my guess either the ACC or the BIG 10 (really 11). These guys all crave the big money that has now grown into like 600 million dollar pie the NCAA has now become. Having a conference championship game equates into big money for them and they need 12 teams for that. There will be BCS conferences adding teams.....its just hard to jump straight to them from the MAC, in fact its never been done before.

All we have to do is use CUSA and prove ourselves there for about 3 years......it might take winning it 3 straight years for us to earn their respect.....we build our fanbase bigger and fill a higher percentage of our stadium with the percieved bigger name teams CUSA have to offer.....then we jump ship to a BCS conference. All we have to do is keep winning, get this NCAA bullcrap that has been lingering behind us, dominate CUSA for about 3-4 years.......expand our fanbase and stadium/+improve our overall athletic facilities.......and one of these days one of the big boys is going to give us our shot. We can't stay in the MAC forever, its been a fun ride but we need to move on to bigger and better things.
You will not be going to the Big Ten ever. You have a much better chance at the Big East, maybe (but I doubt it) the ACC.

After only beating Toledo once in your last 3 games (the only game you had at home and only one on a late TD) how can you think you are too good for the MAC. Most of the Marshall fans on this board will disagree with you.

C-USA just plain sucks. They are already 0-2 in bowl games this year with a loss to a Sun Belt team. Do you want to go to C-USA and get stuck playing in the New Orleans bowl against a Sun Belt team instead of playing against a BCS school in the MCB or a C-USA team in the GMAC?

When was the last time a C-USA school beat a MAC school? If the C-USA wasn't slowly falling apart, it could be a consideration for Marshall I guess.....but that conference is falling apart. If I were a Marshall fan, I would stay in the MAC and maybe someday a BCS conference would come calling. However, I think the BCS will be ancient history before that happens.

The MAC has the following football programs that are better than C-USA's top programs:

Toledo
Marshall
UCF
Bowling Green
Miami
Northern Illinois

In the near future the C-USA will start to lose some of those bowl bids and the MAC will gain some more. The MAC will also get more TV exposure.

If you don't believe me, leave for C-USA and then come back to this board to whine about the mistake 3 or 4 years from now!
I happen to like it right here in the MAC. I can't speak for anyone else, but I've said since day one that I pray we don't go to C-USA.

From what I've seen of their football teams....well, rocketfootball listed 6 teams and I'd venture to say you could probably add 2 more to the list.

Go HERD
Go MAC
Rocketfootball.........

"After only beating Toledo once in your last 3 games (the only game you had at home and only one on a late TD) how can you think you are too good for the MAC. Most of the Marshall fans on this board will disagree with you."

Not trying to say that....in fact we were fortunate to win again this year with all the injuries we had......just that its time to move on but apparently many Herd fans now disagree with this judging from various boards.

In response to the thread title I would say there is plenty for MU to still accomplish in this Conference.

First thing would be to actually build a solid all-sports program and not just live off of this one sport wonder mantra. UCF would finish up higher in the MAC all-sports rankings than Marshall right now..

I will give you credit for the football accomplishments though, you guys have succeeded, although I can't say I'm so sure MU kept all of their integrity intact in order to do so (and that's being very friendly about it)..
Thanks for your opinion MK, but until UCF competes in all sports, that's all it is for now.
I know HF4L, I just had to chime in and respond to the absolutely arrogant title and opening post to this thread..

By the way, a Happy Holidays to You & Your's. 04-cheers
Thank You!! Same to you and your's!! :D 04-bow 04-cheers  :)
In football that is....what about the rest of the conf sports that we lag so far behind in....ah ha....the football program is on top, but we are really lagging behind when it comes to the non revenue sports. B'ball appears to be making a move to improve, but we are not in the picture when it comes to the conf all sports award at the end of the year..

So we might have nothing to prove in football, but we have a LONG way to go in the other conf sports

Marshall 77 05-nono
Marshall needs to stay right here in the MAC. Mr. Rocket hit the nail on the head. CUSA is slowly bleeding to death (a la the WAC of about 6 years ago). Conferences that do not have all schools as all-sports members are really hurting themselves. This does not include a temporary non-membership while the incoming school is in transition (a la UCONN) For instance:

CUSA: SEVERAL schools in as Basketball only...Conference struggling
BIG EAST: SEVERAL schools in as Basketball only...Conference struggling, but working in the right direction...

Marshall needs to improve all other sports (AND SPORTS FACILITIES) in order to be invited to a BCS conference...

I do feel, though, that in the future, the Big East and ACC will expand (at least in football) in order to reap the benefits of a conference championship game...ACC would need three and the Big East would need 4...Top candidates:

South Florida
Central Florida
Marshall
Florida Atlantic (a really up and coming school in Boca Raton) They are 1-aa now, but watch how they grow)
Notre Dame (sooner or later, they'll have to join a conference)
Louisville
Tennessee Tech
LA Tech

Troy State (perhaps to slide nto the MAC in the event of a team leaving, but definitely NOT BCS material)

I would also watch for Georgia Southern to try to make the jump from 1-aa to 1-a in the next few years. They have great facilities...

Just my two cents...

Living in ACC country I am positive that MU will never be invited into the ACC, For one, its a BBall conference first and we would bring the rest of the conference down, plus the arrogance of acc officals, college administrators and coaches would never let anyone in unless they improve the conference like Fla State in football. The Big East would be the better chance but WVU would never let it happen.
Let me get this straight, HerdNerds.....You're moving to CUSA for no more than three years, after which time you will join either the ACC or Big-10? Buwahahaha!
