ESPN has approached the Charleston, S.C. Metro Sports Council about staging a game at The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium in 2004.

The concept is to bring lower-tier teams from the ACC, Big East or C-USA to town for a bowl game which would be played before Christmas every year.

ESPN has already laid out the numbers for the Council and The Citadel is already said to be working on a plan to raise millions of dollars to get the project completed. ESPN has told the Council that the Charleston area would receive about 18 million every year in revenue.

The game would be called The Palmetto Bowl

I guess the assumption (as far as the ACC is concerned) is that the Seattle Bowl will fold.

Charleston would certainly be a better fit for the ACC. Plus, it's a nice place to visit.
Sounds like a good idea to me...Charleston, SC would be a good city to host a bowl game. I would like to go!

Love Charleston.
One of the great cigar stores down in the historic district just up off the river.
And bars that actually encourage and promote firing them up!
Great restaurants, too.

Awww come on. We know you'd really rather be in Detroit or Indianapolis facing the Big 10 #11. 03-razz

I don't need football as an excuse to go to Charleston. Besides, we don't believe in football in December.
We barely believe in it for the three months previous!
We're nestled in our cozy basketball arenas by then. 03-wink

BTW, the following is not a flame, since it's about Herd hoops and you guys don't talk trash about your roundballers, but something I read this week. There was the no-Herd-in-MAC gap in the 70s and 80s, but did you know the Herd has not won a game in Kent since 1969?
Maybe you could return the avor and find out when was the last time we beat you in oblong ball anywhere? Probably the early 70's, when we were good?

Last time? Kent State still leads the series 18-15.

(Marshall does have an eight game winning streak going. Last Flashers win: 1978, by a field goal.)

On the bowl game: Sounds nice. I wonder if this might open up something else for the MAC somewhere. New Orleans?

I just changed my mind.

I'm not going to Charleston.

As far as I'm concerned, if something is on fire, I'm throwing water on it! 03-wink
It depends on what your allowed to "Fire Up" :D

That's true. I'm heading to Florida next week, and there's not even a Bronco football game in sight! 03-wink

That same year they lost to Kent, 1-AA Marshall had a record of 1-10 in 1978. The only win of the season came against Toledo in the season opener. The Herd didn't end the ten game losing streak until they played the Rockets again in the 1979 opener. Marshall then lost the next ten in 1979 too! Marshall's last win before the 1978 opener against the Rockets? It was in 1977 against the Rockets! Marshall beat Toledo before losing their final eight games in 1977.

From that win over the Rockets in 1977 until the end of the 1979 season, Marshall went 3-28. They were 3-0 against Toledo and 0-28 against the rest of the universe.

Congrats to Marshall for winning those 3 games against Toledo. Let me remind you Stick, that Toledo leads the all-time series 21-18-1! :D
rocket,

Please don't think I was bragging. I just thought it was a little peculiar. Also, I was pointing out that it really wasn't that long ago that Marshall football stunk worse than any program in the country.

The Marshall program was bad back then, but considering the events the led to those years it is very understandable.
I sense that a city like Charleston would be a far better fit for a so-called "minor" bowl than places like New Orleans. It would be closer to a Mobile type bowl, where I woulid guess the locals would get a kick outta supporting "their" bowl game.

I understand that the Citadel has a 22K stadium that is being upgraded to 37K......perfect size for a small bowl much like the 40K stadium in Mobile.
I don't understand, where is any mention of a MAC school participating? Or would this be an "At-Large" event where theorhetically a solid 9-3 type team from the MAC for instance that didn't advance to the MACC would be selected? That would be nice indeed..

More Bowl for the MAC.. Please!!!
Wouldn't a MAC v. ACC matchup be nice?

I know, I know...and monkeys might fly out of my...
I think so Dodo.

I can't figure out why C-USA would even be considered. Why do people (BCS freaks) think so highly of that conference?
