Here's a little off-season fodder.

If you were one of those kids who could choose the college football program of your choice, where would you go, and why? Let's say you can't name a MAC school to keep it objective.

Obviously, this would depend on what position you played (i.e., drop-back QB probably shouldn't go to the Air Force Academy), but let's take the positions out of it and just judge the schools/programs.
Notre Dame. I'm not a ND junkie or fan - in fact, I'm a little tired of the Irish being continually overrated by the press, but that's one of the reasons that ND would be my #1 choice if I were a potential recruit.

It certainly appears ND has a very fine coach. Keeps his cool under fire and can coach. Won with a losing coach's team. Another reason to go with ND.

On National TV nearly (if not actually) every week of the world.

Again, the Media loves the school.

ND players are recognized by the pros.

The Heisman winners, touchdown Jesus, national championships, the great tradition and an excellent university to boot. What's not to love?
Not a question in my mind. Miami (FL). :D

Why? Simple. Damn near half of their starting seniors end up in the NFL. I seriously doubt there is another program that has had more success in the last 10 years at putting players in the pros. If you have the talent to start for Miami, you will, at the very least, get a look from NFL scouts.
Florida... why? Well, they kick ****** (i'm still holding out for Zook) and my grandpa was over purchasing at UF in the early 70's and I got to spend all my summers in Gainesville as a child. I spent my summers at UF and the rest of the year being drug from stadium to stadium with MU. Aahhh, weekends at Western Carolina (name any SoConf school)... what more could an adolecent ask for? :)
Easy...Meeechigan. No brainer. Unbelieveable game day atmosphere, insane tradition, fun town, awesome school. Plus a very nice track record of placing players in the NFL.

That and you get to beat the Suckeyes 12 out of every 14 years.
I'd go to Arizona State. The campus is great, the weather can't be beat, the women are awesome and you're right next door to Phoenix.

Did I mention that the women are awesome? B)
Stanford. Top 5 academics, number 1 athletics. Beautiful campus, nice weather. I would want to go to a school that would prepare me for if I DIDN'T make the pros.
Michigan or Wisconsin. Great schools, great atmosphere. I'd consider Stanford, California or any good school. I'd even talk to Jim Grobe. But I have a feeling if Michigan or Wisconsin were good fits and I knew I would play right away, I'd lean in those directions. I like the idea of playing for an academically rigorous public.

This reminds me: I've got an even better idea for a thread. It's related. Remind me next week, and I'll throw out the question.

Hawaii. Hands down 04-cheers

I always wondered why Hawaii didn't have a nat'l champion team every year. Who wouldn't want to go there?

If I was the player would determine the best conference first and then the best school in that conference. Personal preferences would dictate that one of the BIg Ten, BIg Twelve, or SEC would be top conference. That narrows it to Florida, Michigan, and either Nebraska or Oklahoma(probably Nebraska, IMO). THese aren't always the champs but they are consistently the best in conf. They all have produced Heismann winners in the last decade, except Okl. They all dump guys into the NFL on a constant basis. They have excellent fanbases. THey are in college towns with tradition out the yang. Miami would be a close fourth or fifth and then FSU simply because they dominate the weaker (usually) of the BCS conferences. Nothing wrong with the PAC 10 but I wouldn't prefer to go there as they are often left out of national picture and are too far from my high school. I don't want to live in the midwest or Michigan. I would have to go with Florida as my choice. Top SEC team with aforementioned qualities. Florida is always going to be Florida and no matter what shakeout happens with conferences. And lets not take for granted the tanned Coeds and proximity to beaches.

I'll throw in my answer.

I'd go to UVA. Al Groh has recruited two great classes in a row. Don't be surprised to see them jump FSU atop the ACC in the next year or two. In addition, the campus is beautifu, the academics are superb, they have strong alumni support, and they just redid all their facilities, including expanding their stadium.

Michigan would be my second pick, but Ann Arbor is just too darn cold.
I grew up in Hawaii. (Pearl Harbor). Played HS football there. The amount of talent that the high schools put out would put them UH in a top 10 position if they could keep all the recruits. The recruits end up getting picked up by West Coast teams. I think one of the reasons is there is a large variance of attitude towards staying on the island. I had friends who hadn't stepped foot off the islands and were itching to get a chance to see the mainland. Then there were others who had visited the mainland and felt lost in the bigness of it all. When I got to Florida, I felt really lost for about a year.

For my pick. Berkeley. I'm an engineer so I gotta go that way.

I would want to go to a school with a great student/athlete tradition, not a place with a history of felon/athletes.

I would want to go to a school in a conference that wouldn't necessarily have to be one of the big 6, but at least one that has shown it will be there soon and is developing a reputation as a football power.

I would want to go to a school that regularly goes to bowls and has had impressive performances.

I would want to go to a school with a classy old school campus that functions a haven from the outside world.

There's only one place that fills the bill:

The University of Cincinnati!

I hope my wife doesn't see this, but yes Flipper the women at ASU are awesome. Just don't waste your time working diligently on a PhD. You might as well be at Stanford.

Still, ASU as an undergrad isn't all that great. The engineering program honors college are good, but everything else...blah.

Living in VA, I'd say Va Tech might be a possibility, they have beautiful and intelligent women too (right honey?).

But 2 of my favorite players of all time came from one place, a school w/ tradition and an unbeatable legacy. A place where the weather is great, and the women are also beautiful... if I was a top athlete, and the MAC was out...it would be U$C.

Another POTY nomination!! 04-cheers

Axeme, didn't you get another nomination recently?
If you were a top recruit....Univ of Miami is the only place to go, followed by Florida, Ohio State and Michigan.

If you're from the West...then USC is my only choice.

I had a website somewhere that had the stats......but Miami (FL) in the past twenty years has nearly twice the first round pics of any other school. They are just a machine.

You know what's funny, I hate Miami....I really do!!! But I can't argue with their program. That school only has 11 thousand students or so and the campus looks like a High School..........but these recruits are there to play ball and that's it. Plus....South Beach in barely 10 minutes away and Coconut Grove is within walking distance. Oh...and your only a half hour from the keys.

Why not go there?

Did I mention I hate the Hurricanes? I was there in 99 when Penn State beat them.........that was their last home loss. That was the happiest day of my life!!! :D

HA, and might i add HAHA....

ya know, the description kinda fits a couple of schools, huh?

There's alot of bickering about playing time at UCG. I understand the program is incredible right now, but who wants to sit on the bench b/c a sore hamstring keeps you at #2?

Playing at UCG is not a magical ticket to success in the NFL. Top players come from all over.
I couldn't go to a school located in a big city. That was one of the reasons I first chose OU.

That being said, some of the southern schools have beautiful women and nice homesy atmospheres. Maybe, Auburn or Georgia. Also, Stanford has a great reputation and nice location. Actually, if Stanford offered I would probably go there.
