I suppose I'd have given Penn State strong consideration.

Like Ohio, large university in a small town with a very nice campus. Good academics combined with great social atmosphere.

Unlike Ohio, play for a legend in one of the largest venues in the country with arguably the most loyal fan base, top-notch tailgating should I get injured and not be able to play.
Regarding injuries and "loyalty," you make a good point, and remind me of my favorite Penn State story.

THE best FB player ever to graduate from my tiny, little high school (and a classmate of Devil Bro's) settled on Penn State after being pursued by most of the top ten schools and courted heavily by Ohio State to play linebacker. He suffered a career-ending injury before ever playing a down at Penn State.

Paterno honored all four years of the kid's scholarship in exchange for the kid serving as a trainer for the team. He double-majored in biology and art and now works as a medical illustrator (the guy who draws all those pictures for the textbooks). I've always had a lot of respect for how Penn State treated this kid.
I really think if I was bigtime I would still take the Ben Roethlesberger(sp?) approach...he could have went "Bigger" but I still might show up at a "mid major" school...I just don't think I would go to a school with fifty other All Americans...I would make myself a Big Fish in a small pond and play a Big school and do well against them...that is an effective way to make it to the next level...
