Bowling Green fans are arguing for Dakich, and I think they make a pretty good point. It is remarkable what he has been able to do with six scholarship players and a couple kids from the football team.

I'm far from a hoops junkie, but I vote for Dakich.

Where's Tim O'Shea???

In all honesty, I think you have to go with Judson. He took a completely unheralded team, and is probably going to lead them to a first round bye. The Huskies' 7-2 MAC road record is astonishing.

Dakich might get some consideration, but only if BG gets a home game. No coach of the year for a 10 seed.
Judson is a reasonable choice. So is Coles. I just put the other names up there to be polite.
Charlie! Charlie! Charlie!

The man's got NOTHING and turned it into a potential mac champion...what else can you ask for?

and by the way...tim o'shea sucks....right along with greg white
WHaaaaaaaaaat!!!!!!!!!! No Greg White. I am now starting to agree with Oddball. There is a conspiracy!!! 04-drinky 04-drinky

Tim O'Shea may suck, but he's 4-0 in his career vs. Greg White, and just beat the great Charlie Coles in Oxford to move to 2-2 all-time against Coles. Further, who said Coles "has nothing"? His junior class is comprised of one of the MAC's best recruiting classes in recent memory. NIU has done just as much, with much less (at least less experienced) talent.

Look, O'Shea's been disappointing, but he doesn't suck. He's a great recruiter (Signing probably the MAC's top class next year), and has outcoached some good coaches in his brief tenure (Coles, Gillen, Dougherty). I suspect that two years from now, he'll be considered one of the conference's best.

<!--EDIT|BobcatFan|Mar 7 2003, 11:48 AM-->
I vote for Jay Smith. Can't argue with the turnaround from last year. Even better than NIU, though I thought Judson was the frontrunner until this recent slide.
Dakich has done a good job, as he always does, of getting the most out of his players. As the season started--and the Falcs were depleted even them with Almonsen injured--I picked them to be 8-10/9-9. They have had even more problems with personel numbers since then, but after the 4-0 start, going 4-9 plus another OOC loss hasn't been that remarkable. You expect all MAC teams to win a few along the way.
I think COY has to be someone whose team is one of the conference's best 3-4 teams.
And to think, at the halfway point, Jim Christian was running away with this. Not even a serious contender, now.
I voted for Rob Judson. The man has done more with probably the worst overall talent in the league. Smith has done a good job, but he has Kaman.

Except that CMU's disaster last year is the anomoly. CMU has plenty of talent, last year's debacle was their fault. They are just now living up to expectations. I'm not critical of this year, but giving them extra credit for a turnaround from their own disaster doesn't seem deserved.

Judson certainly is very worthy. NIU has had a banner year.

Personally, I'm split between Dakich and Judson.
This is a great thread topic guys, thanks for starting it.

Like Bobcat Fan, I think O'shea is moving the program forward with recruiting. He seems capable of coaching in the big games, rising to the challenge against the ACC, and rival Marshall. We are only 12-14 right now but we've been playing like a 20 win team the last couple of weeks. You probably know about Sonny Johnson's injury problems, but what you don't also realize is that Esterkamp had severe stomache flu which caused him to lose a lot of weight, limiting his effectivness until recently. Brandon Hunter can't carry this team by himself with his poor free throw shooting.

Once Oshea gets his recruits in here you will see a more guard oriented team in Athens. The kind of teams you need to have to win big in the MAC.

As for coach of the year, Judson, Judson, and Judson. Judson was predicted to be in the basement and he's at least a 4 seed this year. When I saw 2 NIU games on the schedule this year, I penciled them in for the Cats. It turned out that they mauled us both times. No bark but a nasty bite. The new facility is great for this program. NIU basketball is a tough sell when your in the middle of MVC country, but it looks like the fans are taking notice with a decent team.

I voted for Charlie Coles. Most teams would have folded after that Bataan Death March of a non-conference schedule.

Jay Smith is the second choice on my ballot. Weren't the Chippewas picked at the beginning of the year to finish 6th in the West Division?

Rob Judson is third, as he did a pretty good imitation of Charlei with the way he turned the team around- and doing it on the road, too!

In the REAL BALLOTING, I see a very close vote. Hope there's no hanging chads!

Question, and I don't know the answer - why does Dakich only have 6 scholarship players to work with right now? Injuries?
Three season ending injuries and a transfer. I'm not sure about the other factors.
Come on BobcatFan,
You make it sound like going 4-0 against Greg White is tough. 03-lol

That wasn't my intention...I was responding to GreenBBS, who said that O'Shea was at the bottom with White. I was trying to imply that by going 4-0 vs. White, O'Shea is clearly ahead of White. Maybe they are 12 & 13 in the leauge, but I'm well aware that no one is worse than Greg White. 03-wink
I voted for Jay, mainly because we rebounded from last season's unexpected problems, which were fueld mainly by team chemistry/leadership issues and injuries. Also, we did exceed expectations Torch, if one is to look at preseason predictions. I myself was predicting a .500 or alittle better season. However, if we're looking at coaches who have done the the most with the least, I'd say in this order:

1) NIU's Judson. Nothing was expected of a Huskies squad that is currently 15-12. 04-bow

2) BGSU's Dakich. The Andromeda strain which decimated BGSU's roster hasn't kept the Falcons from being competitive. He won't win the award due to Bowling Green's record, though.

3) Miami's Coles. He always has this team in the mix, even with less talent than several teams in the league (Juby Johnson aside). Miami squads also seem to peak late in the season with regularity. However, this is typical C.C., so not sure he deserves the award.

Those I'm not picking, despite better-than-expected performances:

EMU's Jim Boone. From seeing EMU play a couple times this season and speaking with EMU fans (I work with one: HuronDave's not alone! ), I've concluded this team has improved despite Boone, not because of him. His team gets lost on defense and loses more close games than it wins. He also seems to have no concept of when his team needs a TO to regroup. 03-confused

Akron's Hipsher. He has some very talented guards and a son who gives 110%, but his teams never quite seem to get over the hump. If The Zips' current hot streak continues into the MAC tournament, I may change my mind, somewhat. :ninja:
05-nono OK, fess up--which 3 of you wisearses voted for Joplin?

Kinda makes you wonder if Herd fans sometimes have a point.

Yeah, but that great recruiting class hasn't really done much...for as good as those guys were in HS, they aren't all that great in college...they're decent, but c'mon...you should expect more out of 2 Mr. Basketball Ohio's, shouldn't you? Coles doesn't have much...hasn't since Wally left...I mean, back then, he had Ira Newble, Wally, etc.....and those guys are holding their own in the NBA and then some...i don't see anyone like that on the roster now. Plus, the team stood as much of a chance as Paris did during WWII during the OOC schedule.

P.S...i don't think Greg white or Tim O'shea are as bad as buffalo's coach.
How could anybody vote for Joplin? I was wandering if UT fans were pushing for his dismissal?
