MAC considers merger with Western Regional

03/21/03

Kansas City, Mo. - A major wrestling merger between the Mid-American Conference and teams in the NCAA Western Regional likely will take place within the next 30 days.

The conference will be renamed the National Wrestling Conference and have two divisions - the Mid-American and Western. It will be headquartered in Cleveland.

A merger between the two could give the National Wrestling Conference as many as 39 national qualifiers, making them the third strongest wrestling conference behind the Big Ten and Big 12.

"This merger will be for the betterment of the sport of wrestling," KSU coach Frank Romano said. "It will solidify teams with wrestling and make it more equitable for NCAA qualifiers."
What other schools are going to be in this thing?

And, for that matter, who still wrestles in the MAC?
Sounds very good, especially if it boosts the number of qualifiers for the conference.

Someone posted recently that a top prospect wouldn't even consider a MAC school b/c the conference was only guaranteed 1 NCAA slot.

This would be great if it boosts recruiting.
