After wearying of the idiocy and vitriol on the recent non-sports threads, I'm headed back to MAC sports:

Here are the Sagarin ratings for MAC golf teams:

Toledo--35
Kent State--72
Miami--78
EMU--119
Ball St.--129
Ohio--173
BG--179
Marshall--180
Akron--191
(I assume MWU, CMU, UB don't have teams???)
288 total Div I golf teams.

Individually, only Peter Laws (not Peter Rules, CE!), Kent State is in the top 100: 84th.
Of the 700+ individuals, the MAC has 4 in the top 250:
Laws-84
Sean McTernan, Toledo--150
Joe Hurtak, Kent State--241
Eric Phipps, Miami--244

WOMEN:
Of 215 Div I teams:

Kent State--34
Toledo--109
OU--114
EMU--122
BG--140
Ball St.--141
NIU--187
Marshall--188

Individuals:
Kent has 3 in the top 150 of 347 listed (88,130, 146)
No other MAC women in top 150.

I think WMU has a women's team, but could not find its ranking.
Men's: NIU is listed as having a team in the MAC preview, but I couldn't find them on Sagarin's page either.

There.
Now we can all get to talking about MAC golf like you know you've been wanting to do.
By the way, a Herd woman golfer was named Player of the Week for the first time in Marshall history. 04-cheers

MAC tourney showdown in Men's golf looks to be UT, KSU, and Miami. (tournament in Hamilton, OH.)
Women's title--doesn't look like anyone will challenge the Flashes and keep them from winning their 5th in a row.

04-cheers

Here's the lowdown on the NIU men's team....
<a href='http://www3.niu.edu/athletics/mgolf/index.html' target='_blank'>http://www3.niu.edu/athletics/mgolf/index.html</a>

I've looked over the stats and I can't figure out for the life of me whether we suck or not....

No matter, I'm talking golf smack!

We own MAC links!! Suffer the wrath of the NIU golf juggernaut! :saber:

(Golf is that old man sport w the little flag and crooked stick, right?)
Most MAC teams are in Huntington today participating in the Marshall Invitational. Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Miami, Ohio, and defending Marshall Invitationa champ Toledo as well as Marshall of course. Non-conference teams participating are Eastern Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State and Xavier.

Marshall usually fields a respectable team and finishes in the middle of the pack of this very competitive field. However, this season they aren't faring too well.

The Marshall women's golf team is in its first season. The roster consists of five freshmen.

Toledo has had a really good men's golf team the last few years. I believe we finished 17th in the national championships last year.

Considering that Wichita St. (#124) blew away a less than steller field, I think we can officially say "you suck." But thanks for playing! 03-wink

This is good. MAC golf smack!

And a fine day for it it is., if it's anything like it is in OH today: cold and rainy.
B)
Currently cloudy and 68 degrees in Huntington. We will get a little rain today but nothing that should disrupt play.

Weather should be very nice tomorrow for the final round.

No MAC championship this year, eh? Well, why should we be any different in golf than any other sport?! :crying:

I'm sure we've bottomed out. Watch out next year! 03-wink

Yes, you are starting to annoy us with your recent interruption of our golf dynasty. 05-nono

All of our studs (is "golf studs" an oxymoron? 03-wink ) this year are sophomores and freshmen.

Should be a battle. :saber:
Flashes are off until the big Kepler Inv. at OSU 4/12-13.
Just got back from Tucson where they played in the NIT for golf.
So-so finish, but a very tough field:

I'll take 11th against that type of competition rather than playing in the "Huntington Invitational" anyday. The difference is that the KSU program is probably considered more "national" than the other MAC schools. They play against the elite southern and western schools as much as possible.

You know we're just too good for the MAC. They're holding us back. They schedule poor competition. I think that we should drop the bottom five schools to have a better conference. 03-wink

Stick--post the results here if they are in Sunday's Huntington paper, if you don't mind.

This is another galling example of the golf-centric nature of this board!! :D
Exactly, Flash. Let me prove the point:

MAC GOLF: Average Home Attendance Figures 2000-2003

1. Kent --53
2. Toledo--39
3. Miami--30
4. BG--22
5. EMU--22
6. Ball St.--18
7. Marshall--17
8. Akron--12
9. NIU--7

The NCAA should take care of this and drop these underperforming schools out of D-I.! 05-nono

This is completely abitrary and unfair!! Just because we can't get the minimum 15 people out for a golf...er...uh...match(?) !! :(

We're in a down cycle; I'm sure when our fortunes improve we'll be up in the 25-30 range. B)
By God, if you can't get 15 people out to your matches, you don't deserve to be Div. I! As everyone knows, fewer than 15 spectators means you are not only dragging down the rest of the conference, you are draining the life out of the overall quality of your athletic program. Frankly, those with 17 or 18 are a problem, too.
Actually, the NIU attendance figures are skewed much lower due to inaccurate head counts, a la the UCF home football games.... :D
That's what happens at NIU when you don't let the attendance counter take off his shoes. *DUCKING*
