The Cardinal baseball team downed the nationally ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame yesterday. In South Bend, no less.

It was reported that Card fans outnumbered Irish fans in their own stadium, too.

Good job Cards!

Meanwhile, we kept up the prestige of the conference by downing mighty Lakeland College!!

Congrats to BSU. Hope you lose to Akron this weekend! Go Zips... 03-wink
Go Zips!!
Nice win, Cards--of course you had to have EMU soften them up for you last week. (See below)

Hey, we beat Findlay last night! :D

Well, we did beat then #1 GaTech last month one time...
MAC race is wacky--the schedule is basically full and I don't think they make up those 4-game weekend rainouts. Tourney at the home of #1 seed. Right now that's us, but we've only played 8 games.
We have 4-game sets left with Ohio, Akron, MUr, and UB. All at home except Ohio and half the Zip series.

Here's the lowdown on MAC baseball:
Quote:DIVISION LEADERS HAVE TOUGH MAC FOES:
Ball State and Northern Illinois, which share the lead in the West Division with 8-4 records, will have its hands full this weekend in conference play. The Cardinals travel to Akron while the Huskies are also on the road at Miami. In the East, Kent State leads Miami by percentage points and faces Ohio on the road where the Bobcats are 14-4 at home entering the week.

*HOLMAN PRODUCES IN LIMITED ROLE:
Ball State's Kiel Holman, who missed several games due to injury, slugged three home runs in three at-bats during the week. In the Cardinals' 30-12 win over Anderson, After entering the games as a pinch hitter, he belted a solo shot in the seventh and then one inning later hit his second home run of the game. He then tagged his third straight solo home run in a pinch hitting appearance in the series opener vs. Illinois State. For the week, Holman hit .571 (4-for-7) with three runs scored, three RBIs and three homers. He also had a 1.857 slugging percentage.

*POWER SURGE FOR KENT STATE:
Kent State hit .417 and swatted 14 home runs in the series against Marshall last weekend. As a team, the Golden Flashes slugged .804 in the four games and posted an on-base percentage of .503. KSU scored 63 runs in the series on 68 hits, pushing the team batting average up 20 points from .286 to .306. The 14 home runs hit, of which 12 were hit in games three and four, were more than KSU hit in the first 18 games this season (13). In eight MAC games, the Golden Flashes have hit 26 home runs. Pat O'Brien led the way for the Golden Flashes against the Thundering Herd, hitting .588 (10-for-17) with four home runs and 12 RBIs, en route to being named MAC East Division Player of the Week.

*NEWCOMERS MAKING THE DIFFERENCE:
A pair of transfers and a true freshman have been carrying most of the offensive load for Akron this season. In fact, the top three hitters are all new to Akron squad this season. Sophomore shortstop Doug Kruthaupt, a transfer from Butler, is batting a team-best .350 and has hit safely in 21 of his last 23 games, while true freshman Marcus Geiselman checks in second with a .327 average and a team-high on-base percentage of .465. Following close behind is sophomore outfielder Israel Victor, a transfer from UNC-Asheville, who is batting .311 on the season and .400 (18-for-45) over the last 11 games, all from the leadoff spot. In addition, Brian Kimutis has started 20 games at second base and shortstop and recently raised his average to .263.

*ECKEL EARNS NATIONAL HONOR:
Toledo's Taylor Eckel was named one of the Hitters of the Week from Collegiate Baseball. Eckel hit .731 (19-for-26) in six games last week with 12 runs scored, five home runs, three doubles and 14 RBIs. The senior also had a 1.423 slugging percentage and .767 on-base percentage. Eckel was 4-for-5 with five RBIs, three runs scored and belted three home runs against Dayton on Tuesday, including a pair of two-run blasts. It was the first three home run game by a UT player since Phil Pilewski turned the trick against Marshall on April 6, 2001.

*CARLIN BECOMES ALL-TIME LEADER:
Miami's Michael Carlin stroked three home runs last week to increase his 2003 total to a league-high 14, and also became the school's all-time leader with 39. He surpassed the previous mark of 38, which was held by Jeremy Ison. Carlin, who is on a 10-game hitting streak, was 11-for-22 last week and has driven in at least one run in each of his last eight games, including 12 alone last week. His 48 RBIs lead both the team and the conference this season.

*FABRIZIO HITTING SAFELY FOR BRONCOS:
Western Michigan senior Tom Fabrizio has safely hit in 28 of 35 games this season, producing hitting streaks of seven, eight and his present one of nine games. Fabrizio's .427 batting average ranks sixth-best in school history presently and is also third overall in the league, while in conference play he is hitting .483.

*GREAT START FOR MARSHALL HURLER:
In his first start as a Division I player, Marshall's Scott Henning turned in a strong performance against Kent State. After the Golden Flashes tallied 23 runs and 26 hits in Friday's series opener, Henning limited KSU to six hits and two runs in 6.1 innings. Henning also struck out six.

*FRESHMAN CLASS BIG KEY FOR NIU:
On Sunday, three rookies played a big part in Northern Illinois' doubleheader sweep of Bowling Green. Right-hander Nick Hall gave up one run in six innings with six strikeouts to beat the Falcons 2-1. Fellow righty Mark Badgley got the last three outs for his fifth save of the year, placing him fifth on the NIU single-season save list. Then in the nightcap, Badgley pitched the final two innings for his second victory of the year. In the bottom of the ninth, rookie first baseman Scott Simon delivered the game-winning hit after hitting a home run in the sixth. Simon is third on the team with his .361 batting average and third with four home runs.

*COMEBACK WINS KEYS CMU WEEK:
Central Michigan posted its best week of the season with a 5-2 record, and can thank a pair of come-from-behind wins to that feat. Trailing 14-10 going into the seventh inning on Saturday, the Chippewas scored 10 times for a 20-14 win. CMU was also behind 8-2 entering the eighth on Sunday, when the Chippewas scored nine times to win 12-8. Tommy Grubb was four-for-four with five runs scored -- tied a school record -- and five runs batted in the 20-14 win. Derek Schaller had a pinch-hit grand slam in the 20-14 win, his second career hit and first career homer.

*OHIO BULLPEN HOLDS ITS OWN:
Ohio's bullpen completed a solid week. Dan O'Rourke, Anthony Gressick, Dan Cobb and Shaun Peet combined to allow just one run in 13.1 innings (0.68 ERA) of relief. Peet picked up the extra-inning win at Akron Saturday while allowing just one run on two hits in 5.1 innings.

*SCHROEDER HITS FOR THE CYCLE:
Ball State senior co-captain Ben Schroeder hit for the cycle in the Cardinals 10-3 victory over Illinois State Sunday. Schroeder started the game with a leadoff single in the first inning. In the second frame, Schroeder tagged a double to center field. In the fourth inning, Schroeder hit his second home run of the season over the right field wall. After an 1:17 rain delay and a strikeout in the sixth inning, Schroeder smashed a triple to center field and came home on an a fielding error by the Illinois State short stop. For the day, Schroeder was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk.

*KSU CATCHER SEEING THE BALL BETTER:
Eight games into the season, Kent State senior catcher Pat O'Brien had bottomed out offensively, hitting .161. But his average has steadily climbed since then, and after going 8-for-12 in the final two games at Marshall, O'Brien is hitting over .300 for the first time all season at .315. He has also claimed a share of the team lead in home runs with nine, having hit six in his last eight games. O'Brien's career home run total sits at 44, five short of the school record of 49 held by John VanBenschoten, and is also sixth in MAC history.

*EMU GRABS WIN OVER RANKED FOE:
Eastern Michigan picked up its third win over a nationally-ranked opponent last week over Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish were ranked as high as No. 13 in the Collegiate Baseball poll. The Eagles' other two wins came against Florida Atlantic, which was ranked No. 21 in the same poll.

*UT BLASTS DAYTON BEHIND HOME RUNS:
Toledo blasted a season-high eight home runs en route to a claiming 16-6 non-conference victory over Dayton last Tuesday. Senior Taylor Eckel (4-for-5, five RBIs, three runs scored) led the offensive slugfest for the Rockets by belting three home runs, including a pair of two-run blasts. Also homering for the Rockets included sophomore Dan Ruth, juniors Mitch Maier and Aaron Rouser and seniors Jay Juras and Phil Pilewski.

*HUNT ENDS STREAK, BEGINS ANOTHER:
Kelly Hunt's career-best hitting streak came to an end in the first game of Bowling Green's doubleheader on Sunday at Northern Illinois. Hunt finished 0-for-3 to end his hitting streak at 18 games, then proceeded to go 3-for-4 in the next game. BGSU's record for consecutive games with a hit is 25 set by Mike Combs in 1995. Hunt finished the weekend series at NIU with seven RBIs, giving him 177 career RBIs. He is now one RBI from the BGSU career record of 178 set by Len Elias (1999-2002). Hunt is also ranked eighth all-time in career RBIs in MAC history.

*DICESARE NEARS UB DOUBLES MARK:
Brandon DiCesare needs one more double to tie Gregg Miller (1979-83) for most career doubles in Buffalo history. DiCesare currently has 35 career doubles, including four this season.

*MENDOZA SHUTS DOWN OHIO:
Akron's Frank Mendoza posted his first career complete game last week against Ohio, a nine-inning, seven hitter. He struck out seven and gave up one run, which was unearned. Mendoza improved his record to 5-2 and is second in the MAC with a 2.44 ERA. In league-only games he is 2-1 with a league-low 0.41 ERA.

*MAIER SITTING IN THIRD AT TOLEDO:
Toledo junior Mitch Maier became the third UT player to reach 200 career hits, and currently sits in third with 202. He is 10 hits from tying the Rocket record. He is also third in runs scored with 132.

*THREE MAC PLAYERS AMONG TOP-50:
Three MAC players are among the top-50 draft eligible players to date, according to Baseball America. Ohio hurler Marc Cornell, who leads the league with six victories, is rated No. 17 overall player and the 11th best pitcher. Toledo catcher Mitch Maier is rated No. 29, while Ball State outfielder Brad Snyder is No. 44. Maier is also recognized as the top junior catcher in BA's Midseason Update.

*MAC BITES:
* Ball State reached the 30-run mark for only second time in school history with a 30-12 win over Anderson. The Cardinals broke a school record for hits in a game with 28. It was the fifth time this season that BSU has recorded 20 or more hits.
* Northern Illinois reached the 20-win mark for the season following a doubleheader sweep of Bowling Green on Sunday. This year's squad is the fastest to reach 20 wins since the program was reinstated in 1991. It is also the fourth year in a row that NIU has collected at least 20 wins, marking the first time in school history that the program has posted four-straight 20-win campaigns. NIU is two wins off last year's entire total.
* Miami ran its winning streak to seven games with a four-game sweep of Buffalo last week, coupled with non-conference victories over Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The RedHawks are a perfect 12-0 versus the Bulls. In Sunday's game with UB, Zach Schmidt had a double in each of his first three at-bats.
* A pair of Eastern Michigan players hit their first collegiate home run. Going deep were Matt Moffett against Detroit last Monday, while Bart Patterson did it against Western Michigan on Sunday.
* Western Michigan shut out Eastern Michigan on Saturday, 8-0. It marked the first time in 103 games that EMU was shut out. The last team to blank the Eagles was also WMU on Apr. 22, 2001.
