I think their last 3 leave alot to be desired. I think OU has probably had some good enough teams to squeak in there.
I suppose we could all quibble with some of the listings as we go back and view our own school's football history, but it's a fun list to look at, anyway. Oddy will no doubt not agree with me, but I'd probably put the 74 and maybe the 75 Miami teams ahead of the 69 and 70 UT teams due to strength of schedule. MU beat Georgia and So. Carolina in our bowl wins. Again, only a slight quibble since the UT boys of 69-71 obviously made a great run as well.

From my selfish perspective I would consider the Miami 1955 team (9-0, 5-0 conference), coached by Ara Parseghian, or our 1950 (9-1, 4-0) team, coached by Woody Hayes that beat Arizona State 34-21 in a bowl game after crushing bowl-bound UC 28-zip in the last game of the reqular season. I think our famous Sun Bowl champion team of 1947 (9-0-1) that beat Texas Tech was a year before we joined the MAC.

Lastly, I think that the undefeated OU team of 1960 (10-0) should be considered. I seem to recall that they were college division national champs, and they outscored their opponents 269-34. Impressive, eh? You might add the 59 BG team to that mix......they went 9-0 and outscored their opponents 274-83.

Also, you have to consider th
I understand where you are coming from ECK. Miami played against 3 SEC teams that had combined records of 20-16 from '73-'75. Toledo played against 3 Southern teams that had combined records of 17-17 from '69-'71. William & Mary won the Southern Conference in 1970 with a 5-6 record coming into the bowl game, finishing 5-7. Richmond won the Southern conference in 1971 with a 5-5 record coming into the bowl game, finishing 5-6. Those 2 teams did not deserve to be in bowl games.

However, it is hard to compare the 69-71 Rockets with the 73-75 Redskins (I mean Redhawks). The SOS was not the same but the margin of victory was better for Toledo in the bowl games.

I think it is nice to see this Top 20 MAC teams of all time and it is nice to see so many Toledo teams in there. However, I don't think you can compare a team from the 60's or 70's to a team in the 90's or 2000's. It was a totally different game. The game is so more complexed now, plus there is now D I-A and D I-AA when there was just Division I back then.
Just a minor note, but I might have put the UT team of 1971 ahead of both 1969 and 1970. Not because it really WAS a better team, but because it was the 3rd straight undefeated season, and with a new head coach. As a young fan, I lived and died Rocket football on those Saturdays.... 04-bow
It does seem like this list ignores the teams before the 1960s -- if you're going to say "all time," you have to look at "all times." I'm not sure why the 1950s (or even 30s and 40s) were systematically ignored.
Quote:3. 1969 Toledo, 11-0
Toledo finished off its best season ever with an explosive 56-33 performance in the Tangerine Bowl against Davidson. The offense, led by quarterback Chuck Ealey, sparked a 35-game winning streak averaging 35 points per game. The best game of the season was a 27-26 win over Bowling Green as Ken Crots nailed a 27-yard field goal into a strong wind with two seconds to play. This team gets the nod over the 1970 and 1971 Rocket teams cause of a tougher schedule.

A slight correction: Lore has it the wind (at Bowling Green, naturally) died down just as Toledo snapped the ball for Crots' kick.

Lucky dogs.
