Shea Fitzgerald was going to be a star and many have said he had potential to be as good if not better than current Colts starting OG Ryan Diem.

In the last year and a half, NIU has had a walkon die during conditioning workouts from an enlarged heart, had a potentially fatal heart condition discovered in our star player Thomas Hammock, and now Shea's death.

I'm really not sure what to say.....
That's a really sad story. Makes you think about life and how quickly it can be taken from us.
That's terrible. My thoughts go to the family and fans.

Just saw this story on the news...the landlord put up a notice saying be careful of collapsing porches....the news reporter was calling it an omen - like.

Sad to hear...may The Lord be with him
I am sorry to hear that....very sad.

God bless his family and the whole NIU family...
I am sorry to hear this news. Prayers going out to his family and everyone associated with NIU.

:(
Add my condolences to Shea's family, NIU and their fans. And to all those others who are suffering tonight.

Those people, all young, were just out on a warm, early summer evening in Saturday trying to have some fun...like many, many generations in Wrigleyville have before them. This was the last thing they likely expected.

The only thing I can add is don't take any day for granted.
Man, that's terrible news. As FlashFan alluded to, just standing around a balcony cost him (and others) his life. Sure makes one think how quickly and unexpected things can happen.

My sympathies to the families and friends.

This is just horrible.
Thats horrible to hear. Sorry for the loss on your team.
:(
Tragic event...my thoughts and prayers go out to the Huskie family and team.

BG lost a women's soccer player after she collapsed five minutes into a MAC tourney game last yr and during spring 2002, 6 BG co-eds were killed in a car accident coming back from spring break.

Life is so very precious...something like this makes football seem so unimportant.

May God be with you during these difficult times...

Just a terrible situation. My condolences to the families of all the kids killed and injured.

On a personal note, I can't count how many porch parties/bbq's I've been to just like the one in question. It seems obvious now in light of the tragedy, but I can't ever remember anyone entertaining the idea that maybe it's not such a good idea to have 100s of people crammed onto tiny wooden porches.

Hopefully the tragic deaths of these kids will serve as a wake-up call and help prevent future tragedies. I just wish it had come in a less fatal manner.....

:(
My heart goes out to the families of those killed. Having children of your own makes you aware of how devestating the loss of a child has to be, regardless of that child's age.
My brother lived in North Chicago until his death in 2000. He had one of those porches off the back end of his apt. Can't imagine what those kids were thinking jamming so many people on one of those things.

So many parents must now bury their kids. What a horrifying thought...
