In the story that never ends, and advances solely for my torment....

Heard on ESPN radio that a Florida State official said the ACC could go after Notre Dame or men's soccer MAC member Kentucky.

I must say I'm shocked that the ACC deplete MAC men's soccer this way....

Why not just go for Louisville and cut out the middle man?
Can we sue?
If they wanted a MAC soccer team they'd most definitely go for the Zips!!! 04-rock
Well, then, the Zips are gone, because all decisions are made based on men's soccer.
Depends on where you are. Real Madrid issued three times as many media credentials (about 600) today to report on David Beckham receiving his Real jersey as were issued for Michael Jordan's last NBA game.

FWIW, like MJ, Beckham will wear #23.

Real Madrid has an amazing squad: Zidane, Roberto Carlos, Figo, Ronaldo, Ra

My kids have become rabid DC United fans, so we actually follow MLS at our house, too.

Real has an unbelievable lineup. Unfortunately, I don't think they're one of the squads doing a US tour this month. (The Devil Children and I are going to see AC Milan play here in DC on the 30th.)
Love Celtic. Also have a fondness for Leeds and Chelsea. The Gunners are okay. Tottenham Hotspur and Man U. can go wank.

But that all pales in comparison to my favorite European side... Team Ireland.

Say it with me now.... "Robb-ie Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeane!"

As for MLS, there is but one squad...

"Shee-ca-go Fy-air!"

(This board needs a soccer ball icon...) 03-wink

And frequently do.

I saw the Fire play United out here in April in a rather chippy, dismal affair. Unfortunately, that's about the norm for our boys here in DC.

I guess I don't have a national side other than the good ol' USA since the Scots have been so pathetic in recent years. (Celtic are back on form only after raiding the best players off the Scandanavian national teams.) The Devil Children each asked Santa for a Brazil jersey for Christmas and thus run around the house looking like large bananas with feet. 03-wink

This thread is either going to draw a few fans out of the woodwork (where's mollautt?) or draw some backlash.
If they don't have anything good to say about Euro football they can go wank. Chelsea can go wank as well. Their new owner has his eyes on Thierry Henry ... the bastard.

I follow the Scottish Premiership a little bit. I mainly follow the English Premiership and the Spanish Primera. There are so many great leagues anyway.

As for MLS, the Euros have spoiled it for me. I watch it occasionally, but I can't really get into it. They'll continue to get better though.

Now the word is Ronaldinho is more likely to sign with Real Madrid than Manchester United. Holy Cow!
I still can't get over the Beckham deal. That would have been like the Bulls saying, "Ah, we can live without Michael" circa 1991.

Amazing.

(and his wife is hot, even if she was a Spice Girl. I've heard she is the real strategist behind his meteoric popularity)
Beckham is more like a guy with Dominque Wilkins's talent and MJ's fame. Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly was none too happy with his work habits last season, thinking that the pursuit of fame was getting in the way of match fitness. There also has been carping about him losing his finishing touch.

The way the transfer fee system works, it really encourages teams to move players that they think are about to decline. Remember, Sir Alex now has about 30 million euros to spend to bring in other players.

(BTW, if you thought the Yankees were gold-plated, I read in one of the European papers that Real Madrid had a payroll of $250 million last season -- and still turned a profit!)
It really speaks to how close to the heart Euros hold soccer. I don't think (as Colonists) we can even appreciate. Not even with our love of football (American Style).
They have elections for the team president.
I've long suspected Beckham was overrated. He puts in two or three incredible shots every six weeks, but that's about it. He doesn't hustle, he shies away from contact and just seems like a me-first sort of player. Too often I've seen him go for the spectacular play instead of the smart one. Your analogy about Dominque was quite salient, DG...

I miss Fire games... I haven't been to one since the summer of 2001, as they've been playing all the way out in flippin' Naperville while Soldier Field is being renovated/desecrated. The boys are tentatively scheduled to move back to the lakefront for the last three or four matches of the season, though, so I hope to get to a game this fall. (Better yet, plans are in the works for a 25,000-seat soccer-only facility to be built either in the city or one of four suburbs, hopefully by 2007. I'm personally rooting for a city facility on the near West or near South side, with a Wimbledon-style roof over the grandstand and architecture that resembles a classic Chicago firehouse).
To the extent that I wish good things for any Sassenach, I'm a Michael Owen fan myself.

Beckham is a savvy man, but he's nowhere near my favorite player.

The guy I really enjoy watching in MLS is DeMarcus Beasley. His speed changes the shape of the field every the ball is even on his side, much less when he touches it. Papa Lou had better enjoy him now before he moves on to Europe.

Euro football? Bundesliga!! 04-rock

Too bad Daley isn't a soccer fan, or he'd just have em build it out on Northerly island!! :D

I love the firehouse idea! Rick Morrisey suggested in an article in the Trib written during the time they were discussing plans for the new Soldier Field (Egads!!), the new stadium should resemble a giant brick bungalow, complete with a tiny immaculate lawn and an old Polish woman with broom shooing children away. Your "firehouse" stadium is in the same spirit :)

Well, the Fire are the only sports franchise I know that gives all public address announcements in three languages (English, Spanish and Polish)... so that bungalow idea may not be too far off-base... 03-wink

Given the support of the Ultras/Barn Burners, a new soccer stadium with terraces behind the goals would definitely take on the feel of a match in the Premiership...

And DG, we are well aware how lucky we are to still have DeMarcus around... he's a blast to watch. You could tell he was going to be special the first time you saw him play, as raw as he was a few years ago...
