Believe it or not, there was a bowl game called the Salad Bowl and Miami was in it one year.

Salad Bowl Phoenix, Arizona
Results:
January 1, 1952: Houston 26, Dayton 21
January 1, 1951: Miami (Ohio) 34, Arizona State 21
January 1, 1950: Xavier (Ohio) 33, Arizona State 21
January 1, 1949: Drake 14, Arizona 13
January 1, 1948: Nevada 13, North Texas 6

Funny bowl name, but check out the Miami game in 1951. I guess the Red Hawks can say they play in a January bowl game! Nice victory over Arizona State.
Here's a good one - The Gotham Bowl (No MAC teams though)

Gotham Bowl New York, New York
Results:
December 15, 1962: Nebraska 36, Miami 34
December 9, 1961: Baylor 24, Utah State 9

I believe the Salad Bowl was Woody's last game as coach at Miami before he moved north to the Cow College.
Their was a bowl game called The Glass Bowl that was played in Toledo from 1946-49. Toledo played in the 1st one and defeated Bates College 21-12. Attendance was 13,500. Not bad for a bowl game in Toledo, OH in 1946.
Toledo was in every Glass Bowl. Hence, the NCAA doesn't recognize it as a true bowl.
Kinda funny with the size of your coach that he coaches in a stadium called the bowl. Fill it up. 04-bow

I guess that is funny, but I don't find it unusual because there are a lot of football stadiums that have the word bowl in the name. Just look at the MAC. There are at least three:

Glass Bowl - Toledo
Rubber Bowl - Akron
Citrus Bowl - UCF
The funny part about the mentioned stadiums...none are bowls

Toledo's *bowl* comes from the fact that it sits IN a bowl, inside a hill on campus. From ground level to the north, you can walk directly onto the playing surface. From ground level on the south, you're about 25 feet above it, perhaps more.
I guess the same can be said for the Rubber Bowl because of how it lies against a hill.

but when I think of "bowl", I think of round shape. I guess that is how the Hollywood Bowl got its name too? I never thought of that. See, MACBBS is an educational experience :)
The Rubber Bowl is definitely a bowl. In one (south?) end, seats are packed against a hill. The other is open, and looks out onto a scenic... airport I think.
Even better,

According to this site (which I'm sure you all have bookmarked)

NIU played in the Mineral Water Bowl, in 1962 and '63. They were 1-1.

Wow, Adams State? What division was that? My guess is D II.

I don't believe those divisions existed back then.

And I doubt Adams St is any worse than Davidson.
I don't know about that. Davidson was in the Southern league for years before they dropped down. Adams State, well I don't know because there is like no information on them. Look at these scores:

1951
Davidson 32
Virginia Tech 20

1957
Davidson 19
East Carolina 7

1960
Davidson 9
Virginia Tech 7

1967
Davidson 38
UCONN 18

1968
Davidson 30
UCONN 18

1969
Davidson 42
East Carolina 27

Davidson 33
Toledo 56
Oops....they lost that one!

Or Mount Union, or even Heidelberg!

1951
Mount Union 26
Bowling Green 13

1953
Heidelberg 27
Bowling Green 6

HuskieDan Wrote:I should know this exactly, but I wasn't around then.....NIU lore has it, I believe, as an NAIA national championship in '63. Couple that with our MAC title in '83, and you can see why '03 is destined to be a Huskie title year. Sorry, the rest of you are playing for second place, it's in the stars....
NIU was undefeated in '63. Let's hope you can get past WIU in 2003.

I also see that you guys lost to Wheaton a bunch of times in the '50's! Amazing! Of course things were alot different back then.

Hey Rocketfootball how good was Fort Belvoir back in '53?

Fort Belvoir 62
toledo 13
Since we're talking about the 1950s...

1953

Miami -- 81
Toledo -- 0
