MAKO Wrote:Football graduation rates for MAC schools according to the NCAA 2002 graduate rate report. The columns are the 95-96 freshman class, 4 class and transfer classes respectively:I really wish those were the numbers for NIU, but it appears you quoted our stats for baseball, Mako. For football, it is a much less impressive 57, 41, 15. A lot of variables come into play with these numbers, so it's not necessarily as bleak as it may seem. Be that as it may, I really hope Coach Novak and his staff have taken strides to improve these numbers for subsequent generations of players.
1. Akron - 53, 31, 100 (Note: Less than 5 members of transfer class)
2. Ball State - 82, 61, 80
3. Buffalo - 67, 48, 50
4. BUGS - 50, 52, 36
5. CFU - 0, 41, 52 (Note. CFU had n 95-96 freshman for this report)
6. CMU - 54, 53, 0 (Note: CMU had no transfers for this report)
7. EMU - 63, 44, 44
8. Kent - 53, 42, 39
9. Marshall - 62, 51, 67
10. Miami - 48, 52, 0 (Note: No transfers for this report)
11. NIU - 80, 68, 83
12. Ohio 50, 55, 56
13. Toledump - 41, 56, 25
What do these numbers tell us? Well, Ball State and NIU are heads and heels above every other MAC school. Marshall is above the average. Toledump is below the average. Yeah, yeah. I know. The only reason any Marshall player could ever pass a college class is if his professor gave him a grade. Naturally, that is how Chad Pennington became a Rhodes scholar candidate.

HuskieDan Wrote:I'm not exactly sure what the last two numbers are for, but if I understand this correctly, the 95-96 class would be the incoming fall '95 frosh. If so, Novak's first season was '96, so this would not include Novak recruits.Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Furthermore, the woeful rate for transfers is probably a function of Novak cleaning house, getting rid of the juco "athletes" and other detritus left over from the Sadler era.

hashmander Wrote:What does Torch's comment have to do with Marshall? I dunno, but I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that when our kids are on academic probation and they don't do the work (too bad our professors don't hand out test answers) they are ruled ineligible. When Marshall's players are on academic probation*, Booby just says, "Nothing a few B's can't fix." They are just handing out grades left and right in Huntington, huh? No wonder the poor general student body has a graduation rate of 30%. They don't have the luxury of getting "B's" when they need them.Wasn't Mascoe supposed to be the second coming of Ray Lucas or something? I've seen him on a lot of all-MAC mentions, but this just manage to give my boy Nick Duffy the due he is due at MLB.
And don't worry about us. The biggest lost was Rashad Jeanty and everyone knew about him already. D-line is one of our strongest and deepest units so that won't hurt too bad. At the end of last season there was talk about moving Mascoe to OLB this year because he didn't have MLB instincts. Stanford Rhule, our leading tackler, is better suited for Mike anyway.
* Didn't Booby say 15% of the team needed to pass some Summer classes to be eligible this Fall?
