TOLEDO -- Police maliciously and unfairly overstepped their authority Saturday, arresting two University (sic) of Toledo football after a melee involving the university's homecoming court.
The fracas occurred during the 2003 Mid-American Conference championship game at Frickers in downtown Toledo.
Police alleged the dispute began soon after the Rocket football team gathered at the restaurant to finish off another outstanding season with another MAC championship game.
Sources say Bertha Taylor, 30, of Toledo, rudely suggested to Toledo tackle Erik Faasen that the Rockets would not win the conference championship.
Faasen politely broke a bottle over the head of the Taylor -- a curvy non-traditional student who was named homecoming queen last month -- then began discussing the finer points of MAC commissioner Rick Chryst's leadership with the woman.
When two other members of the homecoming court ran over to intervene on Taylor's behalf, cornerback Brandon Hefflin heaved a urinal at the thundering herd, knocking the trio to the wooden floor.
"Got your back man," Hefflin said, accepting a high-five from Faasen. "I've been working on that move since January."
A Fickers manager estimated damages to the restaurant will cost $31,000 to repair, including $6,000 for the floor and roughly $10,000 for the dishes dislodged from their shelves by the force of the women hitting the ground.
The restaurant's foundation is also severely damaged and will cost "fifteen thou, easy," to fix, according to the manager.
Hefflin and Faasen were both taken to jail on trumped up charges of misdemeanor assault.
Taylor and her two friends were uninjured. Nevertheless, it took two fire companies 90 minutes to help the young women to their feet.
"That Faasen is sure a little cutie," Taylor said later. "I like my men small and feisty."
Toledo head coach Tom Amstutz was unavailable for comment. The lovable leader of the mighty Toledo Rockets was sleeping with his face down in a giant basket of sesame-flavored chicken wings.
"Some people eat until they're full," mused placekicker Jason Robbins. "Coach eats until he gets tired."
News and notes: In a battle of Heisman finalists, Bowling Green defeated Miami 38-30 to win the MAC championship at Doyt Perry Stadium in Bowling Green.
