I will be looking to develop a comprehensive custom Java chat applet for our site. It will use existing MYSQL tables for Invision to make all members login before chatting.

I am toying with making it open source and liscensed under GNU Public Liscense. If this were the case, I'd put it up on FreshMeat and SourceForge and get some backtraffic to a development page on NCAAbbs. Kinda of indirect recruitment of new members.

If anybody is interested in this project... please reply.

I would consider just taking a look at invisionboards java chat app it will save you a lot of time.
