CONFERENCE USA INVITES MARSHALL, UCF

CHICAGO (AP) -- Conference USA announced Sunday afternoon it has invited Marshall University and the University of Central Florida to join the league in all sports.

Conference USA was not expected to make its expansion plans public until November. But league commissioner Britton Banowsky said he did not want to wait that long in light of the stunning performances put on by the Marshall and Central Florida football teams Saturday.

"Cincinnati is obviously bound for the Big East," Banowsky said. "And when we thought about trying to replace that kind of football tradition, that level of football talent, that committment to football excellence, we could only think of one school: Marshall University.

"Really, in terms of football, I think Marshall University will pick up right where Cincinnati left off," he said. "When you talk about college football tradition, you talk about Cincinnati and Marshall in the same breath."

"Any team that can give Troy State a game like that will definitely improve our league," Banowsky said.

"And Central Florida -- I mean, gosh, words don't describe the kind of game they gave Kent State Saturday. When you talking about leaving it on the field -- the Golden Knights did that again and again yesterday," he said.

"When I think about trying to replace a program like Army, I think Central Florida, definitely," he said.

"There are some naysayers who argue Conference USA won't miss Army. And they may be right," Banowsky said. "But by bringing in Central Florida -- with those gold-and-black uniforms, with that tradition-filled nickname -- I'm not sure anyone will even notice Army has left the league."

Marshall athletic director Bob Marcum said he looks forward to the challenge Conference USA will pose to the Thundering Herd.

"It's really tough getting beat at your own place by the likes of Toledo," Marcum said. "And we all know what Akron can do."

"But when I think what East Carolina has done lately in terms of football, I just can't wait to bring that program in here every other year. I really relish the challenge of lining up with East Carolina on the football field."

And if history repeats itsself.....Marshall and Toledo will meet again before it's said and done.
See, running away to the West Division won't help your chances of winning a championship. You have to play the whole season and quit folding like a cheap lawn chair. :D

Hey, if history always repeated itself, the Herd would still be getting slobbernockered by the likes of the Bobcats in Fairfield.

I have tremendous respect for Marshall and I hope the Herd remain with us. I was trying to get some digs in at Conference USA more than I was Marshall or Central Florida.

Considering the last week, I suppose everyone involved deserved some digs.

(But ESPECIALLy Conference USA. Texas Christian won 13-10 at ARIZONA. Arizona is AWFUL!)

And TCU moved up in the poll. They are somebody's darlings. Must be those championships from '38 and '39.

As for Marshall...I've yet to see them win a championship w/o cheating or not at home. Meanwhile, BG has 10 as of last count...
And Johnny, when would the most recent one have occurred??
(I really don't know)

Seriously, Torch - I have a LOT of respect for the Falcons sans the
Urban legend. If you guys can't do it (West champs) this year, when are you gonna do it?? I mean, you've got NIU @ home & Toledo @ home. Can't ask for more than that. Oh BTW - do us a favor and woodshed the Redhawks prior to our ESPN clash. Thanks in advance!

I really hope we can find a way to meet in the MACC @ the Doyt.

As for your journalistic effort -

Go HERD - go bg!

1992. Although 1994 was damn close.

I still think that was the harbringer of the end for Blackney. He got conservative and stubborn on offense. Lost a Mr. Ohio Football, b/c a a QB controversy. Morale sunk, and again he held the reigns too tight on the offense.

1992 is sort of a long time.

As for this year, yes BG looks good, but so do NIU and Miami (OH). Frankly, things look good for the Falcons next year, as their backup QB looks stellar, the lines are very young (many sophmores) and the #1 RB is a sophomore too.
Keep this in mind about the West race - last year's West champ went on the road for two of their toughest games - @ NIU and @ UCF - and won them both. NIU has to go to BG and UT, but we could be looking at another road team in tough games pulling it out for the title. Of course, we might not also..
