Full Version: MAC a possible nightmare for bowl committees?

I just thought about this:

Lets assume that BGSTD tanks on the end of the season. Someone had to take the fall. Anyway, they lose to both Toledo and NIU. Now lets assume that Toledo andd NIU win out till they get to their meeting. I think we can assume that, with the way the rest of the top 25 have been getting picked off, that if NIU wins out it will be in the top 15. Now, NIU comes to the Glass Bowl and losses in a dogfight. I don't think that loss to Toledo would knock them out of the top 25, and I don't think Toledo would get into it, or would get in but not above NIU. Toledo gets to the MAC championship, and the bowl bid win or lose. Now, the MAC only has 2 bowl bids, and neither goes to NIU. We have a top 25 team, possibly top 20, without a bowl game while two unranked or lower ranked teams get in. Thoughts?

I'm tryin to come up with one for the East, but that one made my head hurt. So I'll figure it out later.
In 2000 Toledo was 10-1, Western was 9-3, and Marshall was 7-5. The MAC had one bowl tie in, the MCB, and MU went by virtue of the fact that they won the MACC. Perles would have preferred UT or WMU because either would have brought more fans. The two teams in the MACC will get the two MAC tie ins and that will probably be all.

Actually, Marshall went because the MAC (each and every one of the schools) were forced by Chryst to pay for them to go. This was justified to the membership with "the MACC game has to mean something". Funny how that argument didn't stop him from selling the homefield advantage to Marshall, nor has it yet caused the conference leadership to try a neutral site
I could be wrong, but my understanding is that ONLY the MACC winner is assured of one of the two bowls. Under your scenario, theoretically, Toledo could beat NIU but not get a bowl invite unless they win the MACC.

Even though several derserving MAC teams are likely to sit at home again this year, I would guess that the MACC winner will come out of the West because of the home field advantage for the championship game.

Home field is a big advantage among the top MAC team although last year Miami (and terrible officiating) did win at Toledo; Toledo won at Orlando, at DeKalb and at Marshall (this year).

Nevertheless, I see it as a three way race in the west with the winner taking the MACC.
I don't know. I don't think any of the defenses in the West really have the ability to shut down Rothlisberger. Miami may not have the talent at reciever that Marshall does, but Rothlisberger more than makes up for that.
Frankly, I think Toledo MAY have the talent to stop Big Ben THIS YEAR. There is far more speed and talent at CB and the Whip and Rover LBs combined than we've had in the past. The CBs, I think, are better with a graduation and replacement, and the LBs are better as a result of maturing, recruiting, and transfers....in other words, there's a lot of depth at the OLB (kinda like we had at ILB 2 yrs ago). Where we're still having problems is the DL, and, while they're better than last year, still aren't able to keep the opposing OLs off the ILBS. We rely on the ILBs to stop the running game. They can't do that with the OLs at their knees. But I digress...containing Big Ben, imo, would be more attainable for UT this season than last.
