Full Version: What needs to happen next week for BG to be ranked

This is based on the AP poll. We all know the coach's poll is garbage anyway.

1. BG destroys EMU
2. #1 Oklahoma blows out #24 Mizzou
3. #15 Mich St beat #25 Minni
4. #23 Okie St beats #26 TTU

I am confident in steps 1 and 2 happening. Step 3 is the toughest since the game is at Minni. Step 4 has a good chance since the game is at Okie St. Realistically BG can still get in if #4 doesn't happen. Then OSU, Mizzou, and Minni would be out and TTU, BG, and Utah would be in. If all 4 happen, BG and Utah will be side by side in the polls. How appropriate! 03-lol
Correction. Utah has a good chance at losing next week at UNLV. I will pull for UNLV as it makes UT look better when they win and hurts Urban Legend at the same time! :D Also it wouldn't hurt if Purdue wins at Wisky and takes the lead in the Big 10.
I would say that BUGS could be ranked on November 28th if they don
Excellent, logical analysis. Seeing Mizzou go all the way from #42 to #24 for beating Nebraska (ranked a lofty #18 this week) has me thoroughly convinced that logic has gone out the window.

I hope that Coach Brandon and the boys keep sportsmanship in mind this week against EMU. I do not want them to feel the pressure to run a big score on the Hurons.

I really want Purdue to win the Big 10. If that happens, and BG finishes w/ only 1 loss on the road...geez, will somebody finally stand up for their rights and litigate or something!

Yeah, but what can you do? When the 4th string goes in in the third quarter, they'll want to play, dammit! 03-wink
They need to get an invite to a BCS conference!
It's absolutely obscene that Bowling Green isn't ranked. A single seven point loss to the defending national champion is sufficient to keep them out of the top 25?!!

Ridiculous.
We're all heavily biased here, but I think the question I would ask about BG is, if I were a writer or coach voting and trying to be as objective as possible: where are the quality wins? Purdue, and....well, that's it. Two div 1AA patsies, two struggling MAC teams and a loss--and no such thing as a good loss when you are wanting to be ranked--to an OSU team that finally had to go on the road and get exposed after surviving close calls to BG, NCST, and San Diego--who isn't exactly setting the world of college football on fire. I might vote them in the top 25, but there aren't going to be enough writers or coaches who are going to give them the benefit of the doubt or know how talented they are to get enough points to crack the list.
BG needs a MAC win over a team with a winning record--NIU, UT, MUr--and will need all three to stay ranked. I'm afraid that's the harsh reality for BG, NIU, and MUr--NIU might get a little slack if they lose a close one to BG or UT.
What is obscene is that Miami, OH is lower than BG and both teams should be in the top 25.... Now y'all know how it has felt over the last many years when Toledo would be winning but never could crack the top 25... frustrating...
I agree Ax, that's what it will take to get BG over the hump, but there is a great deal of hypocrisy if BG isn't ranked (despite a very good win over Purdue) while a Kansas St is (a mediocre win over Cal, then wins over McNeese St, Troy St, UMass, and losses to Marshall and Texas).

Miami should be ranked, though having Cincy lose to UAB this weekend doesn't help their cause. Colorado St absolutely wiping the mat with BYU should earn them more props, though.

I can understand that question...but if you're willing to put Purdue on your ballot, then BG should be at least 1 slot higher.

As for the "quality losses", I can understand that too, but tell it to those who voted for Auburn, Florida, Kansas St, etc.
Purdue has more quality wins than BG--and if you want to say BG is a top 25 team, then the loss by Purdue doesn't hurt them so much.
I''m not saying PU is a better team, but in terms of how voting top 25 works, you will have teams who beat higher ranked teams, but the rest of their schedule does not compare. BG can catch up here if they beat some good teams. One game does not a comparison make--it's everything else a team has done, too.
Fail to see where Purdue has more quality wins

BG - L record 5-1
W.F- W Deacons were ranked 21 when they played...now are .500 3-3
Arizona- W record 1-6
Notre Dame - W record 2-3
Illinois- W record 1-6
Penn State- W record 2-5

Up to this point the only team that has been consistent is BG and Purdue lost to them.
I think any of those teams would put a serious whuppin' on Eastern KY or Liberty.

My point was not to put down BG, but to look at the reality of of the polls.

or CMU, and possibly WMU.

Purdue's schedule at this point is much better than BG's. Don't forget that ND's two wins are over nationally ranked Wash St (top 10 right now) and Pitt.

But that's just the Purdue argument. I still think BG should be ranked at least in the top 25, but would put Miami ahead of BG.
Actually, looking at the title of this Thread... "What does BG need to be ranked" that is misleading.. the Bird Brains are alread Rank!!!!  03-nutkick 03-nutkick
