Full Version: Why are we so unloved?

How come none of the conferences want Toledo? A solid program in the football Mecca of Ohio. Are we dommed to relative unnoteriety in the MAC? Is unnoteriety even a word?
When we produce a high first round draft pick and win a couple more bowl games....we'll start getting some love. Marshall has been bowling every year since they came to the MAC way back in 97'(???).

When we start bowling more often.......and Chester Taylor starts......you'll see the love then.

If we expand the Glass Bowl to 40k......we will definitely be wanted by other conferences.

Don't worry...it will happen. I give us about 3-5 years before we hit that next plateau. Stutz has this team headed in the right direction...and he still hasn't had truly his own group of players matured yet. Just wait until next year or the year after when those freshmen that played 2 years ago are JRs or SRs.....watch how good the team is then.

As Oddball told me.....have faith!
actually, our #1 problem as to why we aren't loved? because everytime we get rank... and I mean every single mother loving time we have been ranked over the past 10 mother loving years... they start talking about us... showing clips of our games and we choke and get knocked out of the polls.. 03-banghead we got up to 18th several years ago... 92 or 93 we had a packed house and we lost the next week... 03-banghead

just like this year.. we were soooo on the cusp when we beat Pitt... and then... 03-banghead

That's not entirely true. 10-1 in 2000. We were completely screwed by the MAC and then by the polls. Toledo didn't do anything to drop out that year. 2001 we finished Top 25. But, you do have a point, to a point...we haven't always helped ourselves. OTOH, how many BCS teams do the same thing year in and year out. Notre Dame gets ranked every single year, yet they tend to suck every single year. The pollsters don't seem to mind that.

EXACTLY! A lot of those teams would have a heck of a time competing in non-BCS conferences--maybe even 1AA! 03-wink
Speaking of 2001, I believe Toledo and Marshall both ended the season ranked. I saw an AP article that stated the MAC has 2 teams ranked for the first time since 73, which is incorrect. Further, in 1973 there was only the AP and UPI polls and they only listed top 20 teams. How many times in the last 30 years would we have two teams ranked in the top 25 if they went up to 25 teams in all of that time? Apples to apples.
Every year, the polls start out the same... with the same stupid teams ranked in the top ten... I just hope someone knocks off Ok from the skokie and Miami (the lesser state)

You know, if Toledo makes it to the bowl game AND wins our bowl game... they have to rank us at the start next year because of ALL the players we have coming back!!!

I don't understand that either, as I believe both Marshall and Toledo ended the season ranked in both polls in 2001. I could understand that oversight if the rankings were 20 years old but it was 2 freakin years ago. I also seem to remember all sorts of press about the fact that the MAC was the only non-BCS conference to finish with two ranked teams in the final polls. :chair:
Maybe it's the first time that two MAC schools are ranked during the season.

That's not right either because Toledo and Marshall were both ranked before UT lost at BG in 2001. We then re-entered the Top 25 after beating Marshall in the MACC and Cincy in the Motor City Bowl. Marshall fell out after losing to us in the MACC, but re-entered after beating East Carolina in the GMAC.
I think the point of the story was that it was the first time 2 ranked MAC teams PLAYED each other while ranked.
I know the point. Although, in 1973 both Miami and Kent State were ranked when Miami beat Kent 20-10. Kent was 7-1 and Miami was 8-0 going into the game.

Both teams were in the MAC and it was a conference game.

Kind of off the original topic but I saw your post about Chester Taylor and thought I'd share this with you guys.
He had a pretty good game Sunday but I didn't see any mention of it on these boards.
He touched the ball 10 times for 111 all-purpose yards, and scored a rushing TD.

Chester is doing really good. I have him in the fantasy league I am in and I got 9 points out of him last weekend.

Jamal Lewis is a little banged up and has a shoulder injury he is trying to play through. Word is that Chester will continue to get more playing time and more chances to shine while Lewis is banged up.

Chester has been the kick returner for Baltimore and I believe he has been named their punt returner now too.
