Default is the 7th-place team in the Big Ten (can't count to 11).
What if two Big Ten teams get BCS invites? Does that mean the 8th-place team HAS TO be invited? Should that league have a bowl-eligible 8th, it would almost certainly be Northwestern, likely with a 6-6 record. That would be horrible!! (Well, maybe it would be O.K. if NIU was the opponent, but only due to the proximity of the two schools to each other.)
If the 8th doesn't HAVE TO be invited or one is not available, here's what I'd like to see.
Option 1. Attempt to trade a 7-5 BCS team earmarked for another bowl in exchange for a 3rd MAC team (could have a record anywhere from 11-1 to 9-3; maybe even ranked).
Option 2. Take NAVY or even UCONN.
