Soon after Bowling Green promoted Gregg Brandon to head coach last December, he bought 10 season tickets at Doyt Perry Stadium. That in itself is not unusual. Coaches have handfuls of tickets at a lot of schools. But Brandon bought seats right behind the opposing bench.

The Falcons, 8-0 and ranked 16th last year, lost at Northern Illinois, 26-17. One reason is that the Huskies student section, right behind the Bowling Green bench, made so much noise that it affected communication on the field and on the sideline.

"Northern Illinois was louder than Ohio State and Purdue were this year," Brandon said. "I was in the press box. I kept asking, 'What's the matter? What's the matter?' They said, 'Coach, we can't hear.' They (the NIU students) had those thunder sticks. They were right behind our bench."

So Brandon bought 10 season tickets behind the opponent's bench, and decided to give them out to Bowling Green students. And not just any students, either.

"I want 10 whack jobs," Brandon said.

Brandon went to the student union and asked students to audition. The winner would get the 10 tickets, as long as he promised that his nine friends would have a screw loose every Saturday afternoon.

The winner, senior Shaun Pelley, wore an orange cape and mask, and, carrying a Bowling Green flag, ran through the middle of practice yelling.

"The kids looked at each other and told me, 'That guy will work,'" Brandon said.

Junior Nick Martin, with his face painted orange and black, called Pelley, "King Whack Job."

Pelley and his friends don't just yell at the players, although they do a nice job of that. They're original. Senior Nick Gillespie said they got the number of the sideline phone for the opposing team and called it during the first couple of games, delivering a message of, uh, goodwill. The policeman on the sideline discouraged them from continuing.

Pelley is a soft-spoken environmental sciences major, if you can be soft-spoken while wearing a pumpkin carved in the shape of a helmet on your head. He and his several of his buddies spent seven hours carving pumpkins as headgear

"This week, we wanted to get on TV," Pelley said. "Get pumpkins on our head. Be original." They did get on TV during the Falcons' 34-18 win, and the crowd of 31,007, many with thunder sticks of their own (payback for last season), made a huge difference, according to both Brandon and quarterback Josh Harris. Judging from the noise, Brandon had way more than 10 whack jobs.

So now BG is more like Duke? Geez, how low can you sink?
That's hilarious. 03-lol 03-lol

I hate it when I hear about our kids being outright hostile to opposition fans, but I love it when they take their role as the 12th man seriously. Kudos to Brandon for doing that for those kids.

It's also great to see kids in the MAC starting to have fun with athletic events. When I was an undergrad at NIU in the mid-80's, football games were often viewed as torture engines to be avoided at all costs. The atmosphere at Huskie stadium the last few years has benn fantastic and it sounds like Brandon is doing a good job of imparting a festive atmosphere to the Doyt.

I've watched a lot of college football in my time and I must admit I was impressed with how loud the crowd for the Miami/BG seemed.
I'm glad to hear that our crowd has inspired fans to get behind their team and try to create a home field advantage......but "whack jobs" auditioned by the head coach?? Are the BG fans that tame that they needed the head coach to rile them up with free tix?? 03-lol
Students get in free anyway at BG. I think it's the notion of being recognized as a "Whack Job" that is so inspiring. :)
I know of a bunch of kids at NIU who make a point of trying to distract or get under the skin of specific players, often with great success.
In particuliar, a bunch of students made a point of distracting CMU's Chris Kamen during their game in DeKalb last year, with pretty decent results.
Unfortunately, much like our b-ball team, no one bothered to cover their three point shooters.

Yeah, that'll look good on a resume  :chair:
I think the whole thing is great. Coach Brandon built a core of students who will drag others along with them, much as Toledo's Blue Crew has. It took quite a few seasons, but those guys got it going on. Get the students having fun at the games and you'll see attendance payoffs for years to come.

Absolutely! Those kids are the alums of the future and if they take away a favorable view of BG athletics, it'll pay off in a big way for the entire university down the road.

Conversely, I know NIU alums from my generation who are STILL resistant to get on the Huskie bandwagon because they had such an unpleasant experience with NIU athletics during their time in school.

Hey, it worked for me.

Something about underwriters/actuaries being "crazy" is very endearing to insurance companies. As I type this (during lunch) I am sporting my ORANGE CHUCK TAYLOR HIGH TOPS.

Speaking of attendance.........Toledo has great attendance from their students. I think this is what seperates a school like Toledo from an Akron or Kent State. It is not unusual for Toledo to have 8-10K students at home games. And those students are loud!

Oh yeah, well our students were so loud last year that they intimidated the entire Bowling Green football team.....just ask 'em! 03-razz

I spent a about a decade in in the insurance industry. I'm pretty sure our resumes have a common employer :D

Fans like the guy in the attached article make college sports special- although he may cross the line occasionally. :D

This guy actually does research before he taunts opponents.
