Veterans are the same as the rest of America. Some are liberal, some are conservative, some don't care a whit for politics. They generally reflect the racial and cultural makeup of the country although, as it has always been, a disproportionate number of them come from working class families. Some died in combat. Some died when they had too much to drink and tried to drive home. Some were horribly mangled by enemy shells. Some never got close to getting shot at. Some were heros in war. Some were cowards. Until this generation, many were draftees. Today, all are volunteers. The volunteers joined for as many reasons as you can think of. Some joined out of a sense of patriotism. Some joined for the college benefits. Some joined to learn a skill. Some joined just because they needed a job and didn't know what else to do. Most of them did their term of service and were honorably discharged. A few committed greivous crimes and ended up in Leavenworth. About a third decided they liked the military and made it a career. Many served a combination of active and reserve duty. Many others never set foot in the reserves and just as many never set foot on active duty. A few of them are absolutely brilliant. A few others are as dumb as rocks. Overall however, they are slightly smarter than the general population.

Regardless of whether they served on active duty or reserve duty, whether they were brilliant or dumb, whether they were liberal or conservative, regardless of why they joined, why they got out or why they stayed, they all had one thing in common: they did their part to upold and defend the Constitution of the United States and, for that, I say thanks.
