Ohio State/Michigan!! The Scarlet and Gray vs. the Maize and Blue!!!THE GAME!!

:snore: :snore: :snore: :snore: :snore: :snore:

Can someone explain to me why this is supposedly such a heated rivalry? On the surface there is absolutely no difference between these schools other than geography. So what's the big deal? There are certain rivalries (Mich/Mich St, Alabama/Auburn, Washington/Washington St, Toledo/BG, hell even Sox/cubs come to mind) that are clearly fueled by socioeconomic and cultural differences between the schools and their fans, so much so that the game is clearly about more than the game, if you know what I mean.
OSU and Michigan are basically carbon copies of one another, with, perhaps the notable distinction that OSU is an even bigger factory school than UM. I understand that many rivalries are predicated on geography alone, but it seems to me most rarely reach the tenor of this one unless there are other factors involved.

I should hasten to add I was born in Ohio and I was taught to believe that Michigan was evil, although I never understood quite why. Many members of my extended family, most of whom never attended OSU, still harbor this belief.

So whats up with that? 03-confused
Beats me. All I know is 90% of all the people I've seen today are wearing one set of colors or the other.
I really don't understand the fixation either. Most of the people that get all fired up over "the game" did not attend either one of the schools.

I can't see getting all that fired up over a school that I have no connection to other than my tax dollars winding up there.
Maybe I can clarify this issue. In Madison (even though I was raised/razed(?) in Michigan), we refer to this game as ----"White Collar Gambling vs Blue Collar Gambling, provided by media that attended one of the aforementioned." That pretty much sums it up, Your Honor. :D

I have midnight blue and gold on, but it ain't because of Michigan! :D

It's funny you mention that, because I kept seeing people in blue and gold when I was in Toledo last weekend, but it invariably turned out to be Michigan blue and gold. Conversely, I kept walking up to people in red saying "Go HUSKIES!!", only to discover they were wearing Buckeyes gear! 05-nono
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of MAC football. But OSU-Michigan is THE game. Hands down. Bar none.

This game is a rivalry for the simple fact that it is always close, and always of utmost importance. This is something like the 25th time the game is for the Big 10 title. The two teams are almost always in the top 3 in the league. The schools are also very different. OSU is much more pedestrian. Michigan is upper class.

If, for nothing else, you have to love this game for the simple fact that a loss to Michigan will ruin every OSU fans' holiday season. That is, simply, priceless.

I wouldn't sell my ticket to the Big House tomorrow for $1000. Too big a game...too important. My heart will be in Peden, but I will personally be in the Big House.

Go 'Cats...Go Blue.

Oh, you're talking about that other Ohio named school.... ahhh, screw both those Big Numerically Challenged teams, and let's talk about the real rivalry this weekend. 03-wink

If you, like many Virgos, are a gambler, the stars advise you to bet on the army of horned demons, and take the points! :D

Yeah, those are the great bandwagon fans in Toledo. They show up to Rocket fans when we are playing a good team and we are winning. Otherwise they sit at home and watch OSU or UM on tv.

This time of year I see a lot of OSU and UM flags hanging on garages and houses. I think about how great attendance would be for our games if our city got behind our University.....you know Toledo, the University that is right in your city......not in Columbus or Ann Arbor.
I agree with you RF... I know exactly what you mean. 03-banghead

rf,

I hear ya loud and clear. When the OSU score is announced at Perry Stadium, some of the "fans" go crazy cheering...po's me big time> Stay home and watch the game (which I think a bunch did last week! 03-lol )

I keep telling people here at work that BG/UT is just a fierce and intense as OSU/UM and they laugh at that. Whatever....

GO BG!~

The primary difference is BG/UT is invariably a great game. :D

BobCatfan,

I understand your confusion. To be a true rivalry, both teams win the game (BG leads the series 35-28 with a handful of ties). With Miami kicking your tails every year, I can see why you don't get it!

I feel the same way when Toledo loses to BG!

So you are going to the OSU/UM game instead of supporting the Ohio Bobcats? You traitor!
I can't believe I actually have to defend the OSU-Michigan rivalry on here.

Come on, folks. It's one thing to be a big MAC fan. Anyone who posts regularly on here obviously is. It's one thing to have your alma mater be your favorite team.

But it's another thing entirely to be so blindly partisan you cannot see reality anymore.

BG-UT as intense as OSU-UM? Get real. One game will have approximately 15 million people watching on national TV. One game won't. One game has tickets selling for $300-400 a piece right now. One game will be lucky to sell out. One game is for a national title and BCS bid. One game is for the MAC West title.

I love the MAC. It plays underrated football. But this argument that OSU-Michigan is nothing compared to a MAC rivalry is just ridiculous.

And, for that matter, the OSU-Michigan game is ALWAYS competitive. There have only been about 2 or 3 blowouts in the last 35 years. This is the best rivalry in the country, and annually one of the, if not THE, biggest games of the year. MAC football is great, but nothing compares to OSU-Michigan.
The OSU/UM rivalry is big. But so it UT/BG. The only difference is that there are more OSU and UM fans. That doesn't take away from what the UT and BG players, coaches, and fans feel with this rivalry.
You can't believe you're on a MAC board and have to defend a big-10 hype job? Hey, most of us on this board could have easily gone the way of the 15 million trained seals who think OSU-Michigan is the end-all be-all of sports. But we broke from the oppressive yoke of media sensationalism to say, "Hey, there are other teams in my state. They are not in some other universe, but the same Division I. They may not have the unending bucket of slush money to keep them impersonal megamachines bent on winning at all costs, but they are spiritually more healthy and fun to root for!"

That's why on this board you'll find some of the most enlightened minds in sports. People who refused to be spoon-fed.

If a celebration of Michigan-OSU is what you seek, I'm sure many other boards will accomodate you. But MAC football is not some cute sidebar to "big time" football. It is the real thing.

OSU-Michigan is a mere pageant to appease the simple masses.
