04-deal Biggest Line Item Expenditure on Foundation Tax Return: Marshall
$542,773 from the UNIVERSITY coffers for Athletic Video Board

Would anybody be able to find out which school has the largest amount of alumni donations? I am guessing it it Ohio or MIami.

I believe the Redhawk coaches wrecked the old one last year, so Miami University had to pay for a new one using their petty cash fund.

(Before anyone gets in an uproar, this is only a joke.)
The video board was paid for by a private donor that gave the $$ to the school, instead of the athletic dep't, for tax purposes.

Sometimes, you guys are downright silly. 05-nono
Actually, it was paid for by ISP as part of their contract extension.
Miami's losses, as best I could determine, came from losses on investments of some of their funds.

I didn't compare alumni donations, because I couldn't find them for every MAC single school. Miami did have impressive alumni donation receivables.

Some schools divert all their alumni proceeds to athletics, others don't. Some alumni programs use their alumni funds to the benefit of alumni and break even (e.g. not charging for home and away game tailgates, etc, like Toledo) on the events. While other programs use their alumni events as profit centers, and have a considerable mark up on all their athletic events; especially on away, and bowl game tailgates.

It seems to me that if you want to increase your alumni membership, you would use those events to attract members. If someone pays, say $50 to be a member of the alumni association, then charging them $20 for hot dogs and chips at an alumni event seems rather greedy. But if everyone is a member of the alumni organization just for graduating (like at Rice University, for example) then charging for events makes sense. However, at Rice for around $10 you get beer, red beans and rice, cornbread, cajun sausage, dessert and a good band for entertainment. That's also because on their donation campaigns they have many students volunteers who call up donors and START with asking for double the amount the person gave their year before (in some cases $500), and a lot of the firms have company matching. Then there are the schools that call up and ask for only $15 and then wonder why people only give them $10.

Alot of the level of alumni donations has to do with the sophistication used to solicit the funds, and the perceived return people get for their money. My guess is that Miami has a pretty sophisticated system. The couple times I have been to Oxford for games, it looked like the Alumni tailgate was a pretty nice spread.

There shouldn't be any tax difference to the donor between the athletic department and the general fund, and if there is, y'all have bigger management problems than sources and uses of funds.

I've got a colleague who does exempt orgs work. Should I send you his card? :D
Y'all think we're dumb enough to put all of our ASSets on the books? Who the phuck do you think you're talkin' to, Arthur Anderson? Chrissakes, CMU owns massive amounts of real estate throughout Michigan and elsewhere, has one of the largest public radio/tv broadcasting systems in the nation, not to mention the income from pimpin', hoin', drugs, and gamblin'. Sh!t, yo book numbers are valet parking change in Mt. Pleasant! :D
BTW, just what the phuck is Buffalo spending their money on? Cause we's here, know it ain't on athletics! No diggity, no doubt! :D

Just to confirm...it WAS ISP that paid for the video board, just like they did with the football one. Apparently, they do this in exchange for the right to put advertising on it and split the revenue with the school.

The information I had about the private donor was actually for the new floor for basketball.

no, but it might make a difference to the NCAA if they told a donor to distance himself from the Athletic Dept.

you know, hypothetically...
