I had a chance to speak with the commish of the Missouri Valley recently, and he told me they are re-instituting a policy where the MVC schools are fined for every game they play against a non-Division I school.
I think this is a good policy and would serve the MAC well.
Is it just me or am I seeing more and more schools that I've never even heard of flash across the score ticker on ESPN2? And I've heard of A LOT of SCHOOLS!
Okay, you want an easy game to start with, so you got your Findlay, WV Tech, etc. But Division I has almost 320 schools now. Enough for everyone to find some patsies. IPFW can only play so many people, true, but that's why god invented the Big South.
Thoughts?
We play Cornell College and St.Francis this year:rolleyes:. That'll get us some easy wins, but it's not going to help us get a regular network affiliate to broadcast our games as I mentioned on the weekly hoops thread...
That's a nice policy, but it's going to end up hurting their league RPI unless they schedule all solid D-1 programs.

Ball State plays Anderson tomorrow night, a Division III school from just 15 minutes down the road. While in the past I've been very critical of such games, unless BSU can get a quality D-1 opponent to fill that home game, I'd rather they go ahead and play the non-D1 school, because it won't hurt your RPI like a game against a Mid-Continent Conference or MEAC team would.

Until the RPI is changed to rectify this, I have no problem with MAC schools scheduling a non-D1 team (or two at the MOST) every year when they are unable to secure a quality home game.

In 2001-02, we insisted on adding D-1 home games against Elon and Austin Peay. The former dropped our RPI a good 15-20 spots, even though we won by 30. That drop could have been enough to keep us out of an NCAA at-large bid that season. In retrospect, we would have been better off playing Indiana Wesleyan or Taylor.

Wow, after reading your post Papa Lou, I discovered St.Francis is actually div-1.

So, beating St. Francis hurts our RPI more than beating Cornell College?

That makes no sense at all. What's the rationale for this discrepancy?
Beating a low-ranked Division I team hurts your RPI via SOS and the like. Games against non-D1 teams do not count in the RPI, therefore a win (or a loss) don't impact the RPI at all.
EMU's scheduling this year has been pathetic and it shows that scheduling patsies does nothing to prepare you for real games.

So far we have lost to Big 12 bottom feeder Nebraska, MVC member Illinois State, Yale and Kent State. Our only wins are against NAIA DII Concordia College and Marist. We play DIII Albion tonight. :snore:

We got rid of the football coach finally and I suspect that if Boone does not make some positive strides this season he will likely be gone as well.
QUESTION FOR PAPAJOHN OR ANY OTHER BALL STATE FAN:

What happened to former coach Dick Hunsacker? I did see he rejoined Rick Majerus at Utah and is now the coach of a new DiA school like Utah Valley State or something like that. They just played at Cleveland State this past weekend. BSU was excellent with him in the early 1990s. Why did leave? Where did he go at first? Thanks, Nick

HD, that's a sweet picture of your arena. Was that taken at halftime of a CMU-EMU game? (ducking) :D

Slight correction. It does count against your winning percentage part of the formula if you lose to a non-division 1 team. However, that's only 25% of the formula. Therefore, even a loss against a division three team doesn't hurt RPI as much as a win against a bad division 1 team.

Just for you CE! :D

Huron, what's EMU's average attendance for basketball? Nice arena...
Nice looking place! Speaking of which....

Last year our average for the conference games was 3,245. OOC attendance was putrid due to our equally putrid OOC home schedule. FYI - the Convo Center seats just under 9k.
Hunsaker was canned along with former AD Don Purvis in '93 for their roles in an NCAA investigation into improper benefits from a booster.

Hunsaker bounced around the CBA for a few years before ending up as Majerus' assistant again at Utah. He took over the head coaching position at Utah Valley last year, if memory serves.

And while NIU and EMU have some nice facilities, you all are pikers when it comes to basketball arenas...

Thanks for the responses. Man, shouldn't you be punished more by the RPI for playing a Non Division I school? This would encourage D-I schools to schedule each other more. Big Schools can schedule whoever they'd like, but there should definitely be more play between the MAC and MVC and Horizon. Not just in bracket buster. Good home games are hard to come by though. Point well taken.
But TAYLOR? Should Ball State really play those guys?

By the way, those stadium shots of EMU, NIU and BSU were amazing. Those look like first-rate facilities.

Somebody posted a "Catching Up with Hunsaker" kind of article not long ago. About his personal demons and his road back into coaching.

FC: Is that St. Francis of NY or of PA? There's virtually no difference RPI-wise, but if the Huskies make a return trip to NY, maybe I can go see them next year. The Terriers' gym makes BG's look like the United Center.
The problem is once a mid major is considered a threat, it's tough to get an OOC with a big boy. They look at mid major games as a no win against a credible opponent. If they win, they were supposed to; if they lose, it's a bad loss. If they book you, it shows what they think of your program.

Just ask Coach C. at Kent. His buddy at Marquette got cold feet, Wisconsin is ducking us in Cleveland, and those situations are just what we know about. Notice neither of our former coaches now at Rutgers or Arkansas are rushing to book us either.

We typically play one non Division I school as year as an opener.

He spent some very successful years at Manchester College after the CBA. Led them to a DIII national runner-up spot twice if I'm not mistaken.
May as well thrown in a few other facilities:

Whoever takes the pictures for these two schools, they need to learn how to take better shots.
