Ouch...I thought BG was overrated to start the year, but I never thought they'd be this bad...

0-4 vs. Division 1 opponents.

Looking like a long season for Dakitch...couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
they were a tourny team last year weren't they? not bugs the ipfw
IPFW did not play in a post season tourney last year. This is only their 2nd or 3rd year as a division 1 program. You are probably thinking about IUPUI, the IUPU school in Indy. They won the MidCon tourney in an upset last year and then got the privilege of getting blasted by Kentucky in the NCAA first round.

Could BUGS be waiting for football season to end before they can fill out their roster as they did last year? Or was last year's late push just a fluke flash in the pan? If they keep this up, Danny Boy will wish he had taken that WVU job afterall. 03-razz
thats it, I only knew them as oooiii puiii
ooii puii is where my brother went to med school. They had the absolute longest graduation ceremony in the history of mankind.

Mastodons hold on for their 1st victory

Bowling Green coach and former Indiana University player Dan Dakich stole some attention from IPFW when he was ejected from their game Wednesday night for an obscenity-filled tirade at the officials with 1.7 seconds remaining.
But the IPFW men's basketball team stole the attention back when it sealed its first victory of the season, an 81-75 win over the Falcons, in the Mastodons' most balanced effort of the season in front of 1,426 fans at Memorial Coliseum.

"Overdue," IPFW forward Ric Wyand said when asked about the team's first win.

"Everybody came to play tonight," Wyand said. "Tonight, I think we were all there at the same time. We can win a lot of games if we continue to do that."

The Mastodons (1-6) went on a 7-0 run to take a 59-51 lead with 13 minutes left after Dakich was given his first technical after complaining to the referees about foul calls with 14:26 left. Dakich took off his suit jacket and was turning back to the bench when he was called for the technical.

IPFW guard Terry Collins hit both technical foul shots and one of two foul shots, putting the Mastodons ahead 55-51 with 14:26 remaining.

Dakich picked up his second technical with 1.7 seconds left and the Mastodons leading 78-75. Dakich rambled off various obscenities to the refs loud enough to be heard down to the IPFW bench before he was removed from the game.

He was upset when forward Ronald Lewis hit the floor after shooting a three at the top of the key with 2.1 seconds left. The ball bounced out of bounds, and Dakich let loose.

"Lewis was hit directly on the arm - even Ray Charles could see it - and the official saw it, turned away and didn't call it," said Dakich after the game. "When our kids come bawling to you, saying they didn't touch anybody (and had a foul called), what can you do?"

Two officers escorted him off the Coliseum floor.

"The last (technical) was real unexpected," Collins said about Dakich. "I mean, I guess he said, 'Why not? The game's over - might as well get tossed.' "

The Mastodons shot 51.9 percent for the game - lower than Bowling Green's 57.7 percent - but made 4-of-6 foul shots in the final three minutes. The Mastodons also outrebounded the Falcons 29-22. IPFW shot 22-of-33 from the free-throw line; Bowling Green 11-of-16.

Collins led four IPFW players in double figures with a season-high 24 points. Junior center David Simon added 16 off the bench. Simon said he didn't start after not giving a better effort at last weekend's tournament at Iowa State. Wyand had 15 points and freshman point guard Beau Bauer had 10.

Lewis led Bowling Green (3-3) with 33 points on 12-of-23 shooting. Bowling Green's only wins this season were against NAIA Urbana and Division II Findlay. The Falcons have also lost to Bradley, Buffalo and Northwestern.

The Mastodons trailed 42-37 at halftime, as Bowling Green shot 65.4 percent in the first half.

"They were getting easy buckets, second-chance points," Simon said. "(Coach Doug Noll) said we had to step it up in the second half."

IPFW entered the game averaging 17 turnovers a game, but only committed 13 last night.

Dakich was left reeling about the officiating after the game.

"This was absurd," Dakich said. "It started from the beginning and didn't end. I never in my life have seen anything like it and I hope to never see anything like it again."

Noll said he was proud of his team's effort. The Mastodons returned to the Coliseum after four straight road losses.

"You learn when you're on the road it's not easy and when you get home you have to make it easy," Noll said. (Axeme: Note to Dakich)"We were the aggressors. We always tell our kids the officials favor the aggressors. If you're out there diving on the floor for loose balls, if you're working hard, whatever happens, the officials favor that. It just happens."

Since the loss at Buffalo had the familiar theme here of too many fouls being a key factor, I think DD is trying to avoid facing the truth about his defense. They are picking up a lot of blcoks and reaches, particularly inside. Allowing IPFW 81 points should be a message. Actually, I'm surprised DD is playing the crooked refs card so early in the season in a relatively unimportant game. Now he can't really use it again this year. (And we'll be here to remind him if he does. 03-wink )Sounds like a very frustrated team that is not sure what to do next.
Going to Ann Arbor Saturday is NOT what this team needs right now, I don't believe.

But like I said earlier, IPFW is not a great team, but they are not a pushover D1 team either. Collins is a player. Simon can be tough to defend when his head is on right, though he plays no defense. The freshman point guard Bo Bauer is very solid. Plus they have some other guys who can shoot a bit. They hustle and get after you, though they break down too easily.
But--they played us tough and they played Oregon St. tough on the road. They will win some games and are young--they should get a Horizon invite and would fit right in.
According to the Sagarin ratings, this actually was not an upset. Neither team had a D1 win, but IPFW had a better SOS and a higher ranking. Figure in the home court edge (4 pts) and they were favored by 5 and half. Six point game. Voila, Mr. Sagarin!
A case could be made for BUGS as the worse team in D1A.

After WVU upset Maryland the other night, I think he already regrets it.

Bummer. Hope the hockey team improves.
Correction to my earlier post: IPFW would have been a 1 pt fav. last night. Don't know what the actual line was, but the 'Dons were a hungry team. I thought they would be after a tough road trip.

You telling me Dakich is complaining about not getting calls on the road? Sheesh, he hasn't watched game film too closely of any game played at Anderson Arena, has he?
Dan's too busy yelling at Kevin Netter to pay attention to what happens at Anderson Arena

Too bad there are no distinctions between I-A and I-AA in Division I basketball, professor.

Not sure about all the Satellite campuses in the IU system

IPFW is that Indiana Prepschool For Women? 03-confused

On ayziggyzoomba, somebody who was at the game that never complains about officiating said that Ron Lewis got mugged on his three pointer to tie. He said it was one of the worst non-calls he had ever seen. He also said the only thing Netter did right in the game was hold back Lewis from tackling the ref!

Don't think that MAC refs give us some kind of advantage. They are probably tired of hearing from Dakich throughout the season and they aren't gonna give us any favors.
So Dakich doubles down on that bet by calling them out before conference play even starts? Smart move, that.

BTW, I'm enough of an old-school NW Ohio/NE Indiana guy to know that, in that neck of the woods, you don't mess with a guy named Skiles. Dan should know better, too.

Amen, Mike. Not making any excuses for BG but I think BG is the only team in the league that gets "visitored" at home. The officials they get at home, I would be surprised if they could call a high school junior varsity game. :)

Well yuh, Netter thinks he is a 3-point shooter..LOL

Been going on long before Dakich got there.
