Do any insiders have information on how the TV ratings were for the MACC game or actually any of the MAC tv games this year?
Well, RedSea, DShoe of ESPN would know, but you'd have to venture onto the Herd Grapevine and leave a message for him while ignoring some the comments you might get (from other posters) for asking about a non-Herd MAC game.
And no matter how high the ratings are, you'd have to put up with DShoe inserting the obligatory MAC-putdown to keep his bona-fides with the Sheltered Workshop types over there...
I am hoping not to go to that board because it will somehow turn into a discussion of Eastern Michigan's attendance.
or how much the mac sucks :D

DShoe seems like a straight shooter to me.
You wouldn't think so if you knew what some of us know...

Okay. Spill it, coy one.
I don't have any "inside" scoop like PaPa Lou, but to me although DShoe has been a veritiable "cheerleader" for Marshall going to C-USA, at all times his posts have been very respectful of Rick Chryst and the MAC "Head shed", and he has defended MAC actions when he thinks the Herd "faithful" on the Vine are getting "out of hand" a bit with their criticism. He does tend to get "cranky" with dissenting views, particularly Vandelays" when he puts "pro-MAC" or "anti-CUSA" posts over there. :D
I just have one thing to add to this discussion.......

Once the Herd leaves and DShoe doesn't give a rats posterior about the MAC good luck in your TV dealings with ESPN.......... 03-lol 03-lol 03-lol

The only difference after you fine appalchian fellows leave is that other teams will be on TV more often instead of the undeserving one that DShoe managed to weasel on.

PL knows what he's talking about.
BG will be on ESPN and ESPN2 five times this year. Was Marshall ever on those networks five times in one year?

yes.

Thats great you were on tv a lot......don't you think Shoe might've had a little to do with that? National TV is national TV, I don't get where only being on ESPN/ESPN2 makes you better than say Notre Dame who is on NBC or Big12 teams that get on TBS.......right off the top of my head we were on the ESPN networks at least 5 times in '02: VT/Miami/BallSt./Toledo/Louisville ........trust me the MAC TV deal is only going to get worse. One very outstanding year by the whole conference is not going to change things as much as some of you guys think (hope). Maybe it will work out for you guys, we'll just have to see.

Considering he was trying to get Marshall games on the air instead of some of those BG games, I'd say no...

huh? Please give specifics of what Marshall game he tried to get on in lieu of BG and how you know this information. The Miami/UT/UCF games were weekday games and the deals for those games to be on TV were made long before the season started.

DShoe is about promoting Marshall, and only Marshall. Any benefit derived by the MAC was unintentional. Have him tell you the story of how he came to get his "title" with ESPN sometime.
Let's get a few things straight here people.

1) DShoe is a nice guy. I have talked to him several times over the past year and I sat next to him at the MAC football media day in Detroit for the luncheon this past July. He was at the Toledo table with me, our AD and SID. He was very personable and forthcoming on as much as he can be with regards to contracts/TV coverage/etc.

2) Yes he is a Marshall fan and certainly states his thoughts and opinions, but he certainly likes all of college football, including the MAC, since he works for ESPN and college athletics make that network a lot of money.

3) Yes he was all for Marshall moving to C-USA and I certainly don't blame him on that. Marshall fans of the older (not that he is old, but certainly remembers the days when Marshall was kicked out of the MAC in the early 1970s) generation have never forgotten, or forgiven, the MAC for that. Also, in 1974/75, Marshall was going to be re-entered into the MAC since things had cleaned up and MU had a very good b-ball team, and then the MAC dumped them out again. Those memories have never gone away for a lot of people. Plus, let's face facts, if you are a southern school and that is where your fans are, do you want to travel north or south to see games? Also, even though it's hard to believe, C-USA does have more money right now, and certainly more bowl games. For the immediate future, C-USA serves their needs and he supports that as a Marshall fan. All of us know the competition is less in CrapUSA but then again, if it's easier to win and you can make more money at it, why not move there - Right?

4) DShoe has tried to be very helpful to the MAC, especially Toledo. I was there watching him talk our AD into taking the UNLV game to a Friday night nationally televised game. I also witnissed him trying to talk UT into putting more games on ESPN and/or their networks. Unfortunately our AD did not bite. I thought the reasons were good to be on TV more even if it means a smaller ticket gate at times but for some reason our athletic staff does not want to do that very much.

These are the facts as I know them personally.
Take them for what they are worth.

Thanks for giving us factual info and not some drivel pulled out of your backside. Other Toledo and MAC fans could learn a lot from you.
Enough of my friends know DShoe personally to know what he's been about. Putting a meaningless BSU-Marshall game on ESPN2 in front of the West Division title game last year pretty much says it all... Putting the Marshall-OU basketball game on the tube when we had three othere teams fighting for a potential at-large NCAA bid the year before that is another.

He's all about promoting Marshall, and his comments constantly running down the MAC on the Herd Grapevine over the years are ample evidence that he's been pursuing an agenda other than "getting the MAC on ESPN."
