Full Version: Why The NFL Makes Me Sick

Okay, I have got to vent. I am watching the New Orleans-NY Giants game. Now, I understand celebrating a touchdown, don't get me wrong but what I have seen tonight just makes me appreciate college football even more.

First, NO scores a TD and Joe Horn lifts up the padding on the goalpost and pulls a cell phone out from underneath it and acts like he is making a telephone call. It was flagged for 15 yards unsportsmanlike. I am so damned sick of the "look at me" attitude of these players. Hey Joe, it's your JOB to score TD's and catch passes, got it? It was good to see the coach ripping into him on the sidelines though. :chair:

Second, NO scores a TD on a blocked FG and the team converges on the player and he poses as another player acts as if he is a photographer taking his picture (in fact, that is the second or third time I have seen that today alone).

About a month ago I saw a receiver for the Bears when they played the Lions (I think it was David Terrell) do a shoulder shimmy three times after a five yard completion on first down. 05-nono

Am I alone on this? Am I being too jaded or is anybody else sick of this crap? 03-puke
All pro sports are heading that way. It's really sickening. I mean look at the NBA, why do you think its such a crap league. I'm really sick of the NFL and these stupid stunts being pulled. Hell, even baseball is getting into it a little bit with the "poses" after home runs...although baseball isn't nearly as bad. If Walter Payton was around he'd smack alot of these idiots.

Maybe these guys should watch a hockey game one time....hockey players play their guts out the entire game, and wehn they score they simply hug another teamate and get ready to play again. I've yet to see a hockey player do a figure 8 at half ice after scoring a goal.

I didn't see the ones today but I can tell you there are MANY Bears fans that are sick of Terrell's crap(I am sure that is who it was, he has this thing about making an @ss of himself). I think he had too many people tell him how great he is(including himself) and he believes it. I do agree some/most of that stuff needs to stop. If a 15yd penalty doesn't do it, maybe they should look into suspend them one game without pay. Of course the union wouldn't go for that.
I always admired Barry Sanders (for one) who always tossed the ball to the ref after scoring. I don't ever recall him hotdogging like the punks of today!
I'm with you, Dave. That is why I couldn't care less for pro sports anymore. ALL college and HS all the time.

I remember a quote from Paul Brown..."If you score a td, act like you've been in the end zone before".

I think one big reason for such an increase in this idiotic behavior are channels like ESPN with SportsCenter highlights. These guys want to get on ESPN so badly they act like schmucks!
The NFL is boring, boring, boring. College football has it all over the NFL, flaws and all.

Although, I will admit, seeing Peanut Tillman stripping Moss of the game-winning TD yesterday to seal Da Bears victory was pretty cool. A meaningless win for the Bears, but seeing a punk like Moss humilated on national TV by a rookie DB was pretty sweet.

Herd Fan, I'm a huge Browns fan, but that type of attitude is what I admire about the Colts' Marvis Harrison. He scores a touchdown, turns to the official, hands him the ball, accepts some high fives and smacks on the helmet from teammates and heads to the sideline.

But I'll blame ESPN for this type of attitude almost as much as the players. That's all you'll see this week is Horn picking up his phone. That stuff should be just like people running on the field--don't show the showboating, and you just might not see players doing it as much.

Maybe I'm getting old and jaded, but following the Browns is like 03-banghead

I agree on all points 100%!! Ditto for college hoops over the NBA!!

BTW, I think the reason yesterday's Bears game was the most fun of the season was also the result of us starting a college QB. Kid didn't exactly light it up, but he brought a lot more excitement to the game than I've seen in a long time. :)
I'm with you all the way, HD. I remember an interview with Mickey Mantle some years ago and that kind of hot-dogging was the topic. He said in HIS day, if you hit a home run, you put your head down and trotted around the bases...no showboating. If you showboated, you could count on getting thrown at (either the next batter or YOUR OWN next at-bat).

I think it's gotten totally out of hand.
I agree, ESPN and their non-stop hype machine are responsible for a lot of this. Even today, they are running polls on the Joe Horn bit, i.e. how funny was it compared to the Owens sharpie incident.

To be honest, if I didn't play fantasy football, I doubt that I would watch the NFL except for the Lions (jeez...I must be a masochist...EMU Football, Lions, Detroit Tigers!).

Watching the Lions, particularly Schroeder drop pass after pass, has been SOOOOOOOOOO painful this year. Particularly with no running game. They have a lot of bright spots, actually, but getting them all on the same page and on the field at the same time remains elusive. Another good draft, a little luck with health, and a couple of key free agents and this team could be pretty good. Um, or not.

Get Millen out. Now. It's your only hope.

No argument here. Johnny Morten worked his ****** off for the Lions for a lot of years. Calling him a "******" should be the last straw for Millen in Detroit.

Some unfortunate stupidity on Millen's part. But signing Schroeder should have been the last straw. Dumb personnel moves should do him in.

I forgave him for signing Schroeder because of need and cap issues. Keeping him is much less forgivable. I hate even seeing that guy on the field. He's never where he's supposed to be and when he is he can't hold into the ball. He exerts the same effort as Randy Moss with a quarter of the talent.
Actually, they should start a new line in Las Vegas... How many criminals will be starting in the NFL/NBA game today?

The last time I watched any Pro Game on TV was the Pistons taking the NBA title... then before that... 1984 Tigers in the World Series... so, 1995 was the last time i watched pro sports..
I have nothing against creative celebrations, as long as they're not taunting the other team. The media just needs to realize that scoring the td was much more important than any celebration.
