Hats off to the Zips, but the Cal-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs are virtually unbeatable.

My favorite HS nickname is the Wilmington (OH) Hurryin' Hurricane.
As far as high school nicknames, another very good one is the Frankfort (Ind.) Hot Dogs.
There's also the Freeport (Ill.) Pretzel's
Congrats to the Zips, there are in pretty "unique" company.
Wasn't there a high school baketball team that called themselves "the fighting whities"?

I think that was actually a college intramural team.
What about the Presbyterian "Blue Hose"?

We also had a local college named the Kennesaw State "Hooters" until local women's groups complained. They're now the "Owls."

There was the famous basketball team in Macon -- "the Whoppie"
I'm surprised none of our West Virginians have jumped in to call your attention to the Poca High School "Dots."

The sports guy on DC's all-news station (WTOP radio) was so enamored of the Macon Whoopie that he used to give their scores every morning.

I'm kind of partial to "Boogercats" myself.
Conan O'Brien announced that the University of South Carolina is changing their nickname from the Gamecocks to the "Illegitimate Children of Strom Thurmond". Also the Washington State Cougars are considering changing their nickmane and mascot to the WSU Mad Cows.
I'm a little surprised the Ohio Wesleyan "Battling Bishops" didn't rate -- or the Heidelberg "Student Princes"

Look more closely, my friend. The "Student Princes" are on the list.

Heidelberg # 9
The College of Atlantic (Maine) "Black Flies" is one of the most apropos.

The Student Princes are there...

You know, I happened to flip to the bowl game with the Oregon Ducks the other day, and my wife asked the obvious question " don't those guys feel ridiculous? It's bad enough they're the Ducks, but in those banana uniforms..."

You have to wonder if the Whittier Poets and the Stormy Petrels aren't setting themselves at a natural disadvantage with those names. As an opposing player, I'd feel nothing short of a good old ***** slapping of the Wonderboys, Poets or Stormy Petrels would be acceptable..... 03-lol
Oh, and the Cal-State Long Beach Men's BB team is called "the Dirtbags."
Usually the Presbyterian College (South Carolina) Blue Hose makes the list.

And, since they seemed to indicate that JUCO's were eligible, I think Scottsdale CC is the 'Fighting Artichokes'.

Who would you like to see win a battle between the Stormy Petrels and the Dirtbags?
