QUESTION
Is there any chance of going to 14 teams in C-USA rather than just
12? I know there seems to be a push to stay in the south, but a conference with Miami(oh), Toledo, and Northern Illinois seems stronger than one with La Tech or North Texas added. The MAC is having attendance problems and taking their top tier teams would seem to be a big bonus for BCS inclusion. Are we only looking in the South?

RESPONSE
"Good points. It has been kicked around a little, but will wait to see what the final deal is with TCU. Thanks for the message and your input."

Oooh... Southern Miss AD gives vague answer talking off the top of his head. Film at eleven!

Re: The ECU poster calling Miami/NIU/UT "weak", yet raving about UTEP. I can't tell if he's being serious or not.
Even though it probably will never happen.............

But ya have to agree, that adding NIU,Miami,Toledo to CUSA would make that the best non bcs league.

The only reason UTEP is considered is for facilities, potential, and fan support. They have good fan support despite sucking. I'm not in favor of them. I'd like to get Toledo or Miami, but it won't happen. I'm not sold that TCU will leave yet either. I believe MWC will go after Boise since they make much more sense geographically. If TCU leaves, I wouldn't mind seeing North Texas make the jump. But who knows....things get trickier every day.

No North Texas ....... No Sun Belt Teams .........

North Texas just over the last 3 yrs since they have got their act together

Overall 24-19

Conf 19-1

Out Conf 2-13

Bowls 1-2

*Bowl Win over Cincy

Do you see why I say no North Texas, they can beat the Sun Belt but when they get out of Conf they can't win........

No offense to the Huskies, but their recent success isn't exactly a long-standing tradition.

They are in a great position geographically to get good media exposure and for recruiting.

But, they've always had that and have had only periodic great years. If they show more consistency, then folks can eye them jealously. Right now, I don't think they compare w/ Miami (OH) and Toledo.

I'm glad they're in the MAC, but I'm not sure they're the key ingredient for a southern-based conference.

UTEP? One great bball year (40 years ago?) and they're a hot commodity? I've often thought that Kent (in their down years) should play UTEP, for "worst of the world" bragging rights.

You're exactly right there, we have little of any FB tradition to speak of - a couple championship years in 1963 (national college division champs) and 1983 (MAC and Cal Bowl champs), plus a current up turn. We have a large available media market that has been very hard for us to crack significantly (having Notre Dame and Illinois nearby will do that to you). I'd even agree that we are not on the same level as UT and Miami, though one COULD argue that Miami has not lived up to it's considerable reputation, until this year of course.

I don't see NIU making any move anytime soon, unless the oft predicted doom of the MAC does appear on the horizon. I don't buy it right now, and I don't think our administration does either. We're in the MAC until the MAC becomes no longer, IMO.
C'mon now, doesn't anyone remember the "Bottom Ten's" University of El-Intercepted Paso?

They are historically one of the worst teams in D 1-A.

I can't stand the thought of adding them. Of course I can't stand the thought of adding Rice, SMU, and UAB to our schedule. Yuch, what a bunch of dogs.

Follow-up Question
Is there any chance of going to 14 teams in the MAC rather than just
12? I know there seems to be a push to look to the south and the Sun Belt, but a conference with Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State seems stronger than one with MTSU or North Texas added.

(a tip: there are huge assumptions in both questions, and both result in huge non sequiturs...)

UAB's program is rebounding. I believe they will be very decent in the coming years. Rice and SMU need to get it together, but atleast they bring good basketball programs. Rice is on fire right now.

I'm not about to tell you that Kent State would win the Gateway. No question, that's a tough league.

But I just don't see how Kent State would be *outclassed* by the Gateway. The Flashes beat Youngstown State 16-13, and I think you can argue the Flashes improved as the season went on.

I think they'd go .500 in that league.
