Won't he ever graduate? He is hands down the toughest player in the MAC for the last couple of years, since Ben Curtis graduated, and it looks like he has a great pro future ahead of him.
He has almost single-handedly kept UT in the hunt for the MAC title the last 3 years and even got one in '02.

Thanks for the post Axeme!

You know the MAC is turning out some really good golfers lately.
Indeed!
Even Ohio U. contributes here:
Dow Finsterwald, PGA Tournament Champ. (<span style='color:gray'><span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%'>1958</span></span> )
:D
These days though, the best MAC golfers, except Curits, have been foreign born. Heaven, from NZ, Kent's team is loaded with the top Canadian amateurs, the Kent women's team which is top 25 usually is loaded with the top Irish women amateurs, etc. The Canadians and Irish like to come to Kent for the warm weather. :D Seriously, that's how the top MAC programs can compete with the traditional golf powers in the South. It helps that our HOF coach, Herbie Page is Canadian himself. He has the pipeline in place.
(OK, insert bad joke here.)
Yeah, by all means let's keep on this.

Axeme, I hope you'll do us the honor of posting the Monday morning Sagarin ratings for golf!

Always happy to oblige, Dr.!
I know your need for sports news other than BG football is great and bottomless.

The golf thread got me checking out the Herd's golf schedule. Their next tournament? March 5-7 at the St. Croix Collegiate Classic in the U.S. Virgin Islands!

I'm thinking being a golfer on scholarship ain't a bad gig.

Those trips are fun, I'm sure, but it is a tougher gig than many would figure. First, it's a two season sport--fall and spring--and the road trips are endless: weekend after weekend you are away from campus. You are at the golf course even when home so so much. 4-6 hours practices, endless beating of balls on the range etc. Yeah, it's golf, but the hours away from college life are probably the longest of any in-season college athlete.

Spring break golf trip in the Virgin Islands. Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo.

Seriously Axe. I understand. College athletes definitely earn the benefits they receive.

I thought this was a MAC "Sports" board...

Yes, but it isn't age specific.

Let the old codgers discuss their "sport" in peace. 03-wink
Is OU participating in MAC sports again?

Back to the original topic:
Quote:New Zealand amateur Brad Heaven, who entered play Saturday with a two-stroke lead after rounds of 64 and 66, shot a 72 to fall a stroke back along with Australia's Chris Downes (69).

Still in the hunt! The leader is a 48 year old Australian pro I guarantee you've never heard of.
Not MAC golf but...

Did ya watch Michelle Wie last night? I was absolutely blown away.

I have a daughter in middle school. I think because of that, I felt really connected to her. It was an amazing performance.

She was outdriving the professional men in her group by 50 yards. She scored a 68! A 68?!?!?! A ninth grade girl playing against the best pro men in the world from the PGA tees with the PGA rough and the PGA bunkers and the lightning fast PGA greens scored a 68?!?!

She missed the cut by one stroke. She needed eagle on the last hole and only got birdie.

Even if she has the skill, how can a 14 year old have the knowledge and the mental toughness to shoot a 68 in those conditions? Incredible.

One other thing I noticed. I'm not quite sure what this means. Maybe nothing. The men were openly rooting for her. The men in her group were encouraging her, helping her with some of the little etiquette rules. They obviously liked her very much and wanted her to do well. Seeing that reminded me of the friction between her and other players on the LPGA last year. There was nearly a fist fight! I just thought that was a little curious.

Hey axeme:

Mens golf is one MAC sport that has had multiple bids to the NCAA's over the past few year.

Although Kent has dominated the MAC in men's golf, as I recall in 2001, Toledo actually did better in the NCAA than Kent finishing in the low twenty rankings. As you noted above, in 2002 Toledo actually topped Kent in the MAC. That year Toledo had Brad Heaven (of course) as well as a local senior (Sylvania, OH) and 3 players from Ireland. I followed the finals on the web and well into the third round of the finals, the Toledo was in second place ONE stroke off the lead .

On the final day they were still in the top 4 (paired with eventally winner Minnesota) but faded badly to finish 14th, I believe. After that season, the coach (a local pro and part-time coach) was hired as a full time coach at Notre Dame. With about the same team (except with interim coach) the team made the NCAA tourney last year but did not make the cut out of the regionals.

Anyway, I suspect that the 2002 mens golf team is about as close as a Toledo team will get to a NCAA national championship anytime soon, although some Rocket individuals may do better---for example senior Briana Shook is currently the defending US National champion in the 3000 m women's steeplechase and ranked #1 nationally for this event.
Quote:AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) - Australia's Terry Price won the New Zealand Open, closing with an even-par 70 for a one-stroke victory over New Zealand amateur Brad Heaven.

&nbsp; The 43-year-old Price, also the tournament winner in 1993 at The Grange, had a 9-under 271 total. Heaven, a senior at the University of Toledo, also shot a 70.

Great run. One shot short! 04-bow

I'm thinking it might be that she's just a little oblivious to the pressure she should feel.

I also thought this was pretty cool. They obviously don't feel as threatened by her as several of the LPGA players do.

I thought the same, until I saw our men's BB team take a week-long vacation to Hawaii and lose to the likes of BYU-Hilo and Baylor (with their 6 scholarship players). I'm fine with little rewards, but our FB team goes 10-2 and makes national news while our BB team slacks their way through a trip to paradise. 03-banghead
