He was "suspended indefinitely from all team activities" yesterday after university officials, including UT football Coach Tom Amstutz, were apprised of the charges, Paul Helgren, UT assistant athletic director, said.

If it was a Marshall player he would just have to run two laps around the field. When a Rocket get in trouble he is booted out. When a Marshall player get in trouble (and that is much more frequently) Marshall does NOTHING!

Too bad, he seems like a good kid.

Dodrill will probably get another chance if he is willing to "take his medicine", which won't be pleasant.
I am sure that the egging incident in Defiance a few weeks ago that led to the death of his HS friend, a Bowling Green student, coupled with the trauma of his own situation must have weighed heavily on the young man. Unfortunately, he evidently does yet realize that alcohol is the problem not the solution to his current woes.

At this point, from his perspective, he needs to put football on the shelf until he can recognize the fact that he has an alcohol problem and does something about it. He was supposed to go into substance abuse before this latest incident----he really does need to get serious about solving this problem now. IMO, at this point he has a lot a trust to win back with the team and it may be that he will never win it back---but he needs to start now: not with a view to getting back on the team, but with a view to saving his own life.

I don't look at this from a punitive perspective but from the perspective of the young man's future. A football career cut short is a lot less tragic than a life cut short as the case for the BG student. He has yet another chance and I hope that he takes advantage of it.

I don't mean to sound "preachy" and without being in his shoes or knowing him or his family, I am obviously making a number of assumptions, but I do think that I am not being unreasonable here. Hopefully, he can take charge of his life and turn this around. I wish him well.
You don't sound preachy, you sound like a typical arrogant UT prick. You're using this kid's death to try and score points in a stupid collegiate rivalry. Frankly, I find your behavoir disgusting.
I would think it would be tough to even stay elgible, facing 90 days in jail , that were suspended from his first incident a few weeks ago, baring any future similar problems.
He's gone. I feel bad for the kid because he has made some very poor decisions lately, but he will pay the price by losing out on his senior year with the football team.

Not so fast!

Can he play?

Stick, he played out of position at ILB last year after playing OLB before. Dodrill was originally a walk-on, earned a scholarship, and was one of our leading tacklers last season while being named 2nd team all-MAC. He CAN play. Seems all of a sudden, going into his senior year, he just can't use his head when he's not playing. And not that it's really relevant to the discussion, but he's also Tom Ward's brother-in-law (Ward married his sister)...they went to Defiance High School and played there together.

OK. Then we'll take him.

I practice in front of that judge. It's very likely that he gets the suspended time in addition to whatever he gets on the new charges. Brock is a good kid, but I don't feel bad for him.

As for Flipper's comment, I guess I don't see what you're getting at.
I'll make it easier for you. The kid who died during Dodrill's first attempt to flee the law had a name. It wasn't "BG Student", it was Garrit Nixon. By referring to this young man as only a "BG Student" I felt that the initial poster was trying to limit the impact Dodrill's indiscretions had on Toledo's sullied reputation by bringing the BGSU community into the matter.

Garrit Nixon died tragically, why not be a little more respectful and at least mention the kid's name when referring to him?

I hope someone is able to get through to this kid. He appears to be a danger to himself and the community.
I hope someone can get through to him too. And Garrit Nixon wasn't just a BG student. He was also a former Defiance High student and teammate of Dodrill. They were friends. Dodrill is going to live with that for the rest of his hopefully long life. I pray for Nixon and wish Dodrill the best.

Hey Flipper, I believe that perhaps you overeacted just a bit. In fact I kinda believe that you were over the top and way out of line.

Let's see, you are pissed because I did not know Mr. Nixon's name. Well here is newsflash, I don't live in Defiance or BG nor do I follow Ohio HS FB, so what I know is that I read the account once at the time it happened a fews weeks ago and thought it was a terrible tragedy. What I remembered is that the student who was missing and presumed drowned was a BG student and another student involved was a judge's son---I don't remember his name either. I also felt terrible about the Pitt Panther TE who fell to his death from a church loft where he and the Pitt kicker were living---he was also a victem of alcohol abuse and I don't remember his name either. Hey, I feel terrible for the loss of 500+ American lives in Iraq and the shattered lives of their friends and family---any you know what? I don't know their names either---it is NOT a matter of disrespect---I simply did not know their names.

Your other objection seems to be I even mentioned Mr. Nixon in the post. Well let me try to make the two points that required his presence once again. In the first instance, I was really shocked that Mr. Dodrill turned to alcohol again so soon after being a party to the tragedy that cost his friend his life. This suggests that he has a serious problem and really needs to get some serious help.

The second point I was trying to make was that while it is sad to see a young who went from a walkon to a 2nd all conference player have his college football career cut short by alcohol abuse, it pales by comparion with the infinitely greater tragedy of a loss of life.

Now as to Toledo's sullied name: having a player with an alcohol problem does not sulley one's reputation; how it is handled may----I not convinced but what if Heflin had had the book thrown at him, maybe this wouldn't have happened---it hard to say. These are NOT "bad" or "evil" kids---in most instances they have an alcohol problem that needs to be addressed; however there is also a need to set a high price on alcohol abuse on any team or it may become rampant. I dare say with the possible exception of BYU and few other, there is substantially alcohol abuse on most campuses among the student body including the athletes.

I suggest that you read my post again and park your attitude first this time. Read what I actually said, not what you think I said or didn't.

I doubt that in face-to-face "real" life you are quite as quick to shoot from the hip; but posts from the safey of the internet offen provides insight into the poster's character. As quickly as you were willing go ballistic on me in the absence of any provocation other that your imagined and preceived slight, maybe you also should seek out a bit of help---maybe start with some anger management.

BTW---I am not into scoring rivalry points as you put it, but if make a future exception for you, you have do too much intrepretation--it will be right out there.
You don't live in the area and you don't have access to the local coverage, but you knew enough about Garrit Nixon to know what school he goes to ? You didn't know his name even though you had a link to follow to the story?

Sorry, I don't buy that explanantion.

If you weren't trying to bring BGSU into this, why mention his status as a student at all? Why not just mention that Dodrill was involved in an earlier incident that lead to the death of another young man (in which Dodrill had no liability) ?

Again, I don't think you're being truthful.

I don't have a problem with mentioning Nixon in the context of this story. I do have a problem with you referring to him as strictly a BG student. I think it was a cheap attempt to sully our reputation along with UT's. Sorry, but I think another arrest for alcohol related offenses on top of the Hefflin incident of a year ago is indicative of a potential discipline issue within the UT football program. I'm sure I'm not alone in that assessment.

BTW, I don't hide behind anything. If you're ever in BG at Anderson Arena you'll find me in the upper grandstand behind the south basket. I'm usually up there with my wife and daughter. You can't miss me, I have a completely shaved head, a beard and I wear glasses. Stop by and say hello sometime. I'd love to talk hoops or anything else with you or any other board members.

(post edited to remove smack)
Again you are making unwarranted assumptions, so one clarification is in order: I have lived in Toledo for a number of years, but I do not keep up with what is happening in Defiance or BG. I don't normally watch the local TV evening news, but up until recently I did subscribe to the Blade and usually managed to skim it in the morning which is where I read about the initial incident.

Beyond that, believe what you will and buy or don't buy what you will as I have nothing more to add.
Fair enough. In retrospect, my initial criticism was worded a bit harshly. It probably would have been more appropriate to simply express my concern without the pejorative language.
