These are the top college football headlines on ESPN's site today:
Well, you aren't going to see this headline:

NIU linebacker voted best Big Brother/Big Sister representative.

or

Toledo QB works chow line at local soup kitchen.

And not because these kids don't do these types of things, it just isn't deemed newsworthy.
Ding ding ding ding. Dan gets the award. I have absolutely no factual basis for this assertion but my guess is that if you took a random selection of college males and compared the percentage of them arrested to the percentage of football players arrested, any difference over time (say a 5 year period) would be statistically insignificant.

But, just like Dan's headlines, neither will you see one that says, "Economics major arrested for hitting girlfriend."

@#$% econ majors...always struttin around campus like they own the place, acting like they're entitled to special treatment just because they understand Coase's Theorem...

Ding ding. You both get awards.

Can you imagine how the Detroit media would cover Bobby Layne today?

(And, hell, most of it would be earned. I mean, drinking at halftime?)

WOO HOO!! Whadda I win?? 04-rock

And what's wrong with that? :D
You know, I'm no Tarhole fan, and I certainly don't condone Rasheed Wallace's off-court and on-court antics, but I heard yesterday that he has consistently given more to the community (in terms of time and money) than any of his team mates in Portland (now will be in ATL), and I thought, "hmmm....I wonder why we never heard anything about that..."

The other thing that bugs me is that when they get a story wrong, the retraction is on p. 10. No one knows it isn't true.

For example, that famous McDonalds coffee lawsuit, in which the woman sued McDonalds and won when she spilled hot coffee on herself --- did anyone know that the damages were overturned on appeal? She ended up only getting medical costs and some change. However, all you hear about is this outrageous tort case (which actually had some merit, if you read the facts of the case). Anyway, while that's not a sports story, I think it is a good case study of how the media operates.

Then again, if the public wanted to hear the whole story, the media would probably print it.
Also keep in mind their's not going to much other news between signing day and spring practice.

If Toledo ends up leaving the MAC, THAT will be the reason. 03-nutkick
