Make this list and it's impressive!

Unfortunately, no MAC schools did. But, MAC schools have a rep for being undergraduate institutions, and I think that's a legitimate claim that's underappreciated. After all, how many tOAMU students really study under Kenneth Wilson?

Honestly, their methodology should preclude this, but there seems to be a west coast bias. UWashington? Get real.

It's an interesting perspective, espcecially w/ UMBC showing up. It also explains how ASU's habit of hiring premier researchers who are about to retire, may benefit them after all.
An in depth view of the 500 best Universities in the world, revealed NO MAC schools EXCEPT the following:

U of Buffalo 251-300
Kent State 301-350 04-rock
Akron 351-400
UCF 401-450
Ohio U 451-500

others of interest
Cinci 102-151
West Virginia 451-500
Sorry, I'm going troll mode...

Memphis made the list in the 451-500 range!

I think most of these ranking systems are full of crap...I'd go into why, but I have conference call to attend to.

You're kidding right? UDub is one of the world's premiere research universities. In 2002 they had over 800 million dollars in research funding (600 of it from the federal govt., which is tops among publics and second among all universities). Five of their faculty members have received Nobel Awards since 1989.

And, there isn't a West Coast bias. I can't see how there could be with this methodology. It just means those schools have highly regarded faculty. The UC system definitely kicks ******.

I had to point this out!
99Tiger?

Does Memphis wish to join the MAC?

Based on the list, Memphis would fit nicely. 03-wink
I'm guessing Akron made the list for their engineering and polymer science departments?

I was kind of surprsed to see Buffalo ranked so low. It's not like their methodology excluded SUNY schools since SUNY Stony Brook was listed 63-82 and SUNY Albany was 83-102.

Buffalo is one of 62 members (and the only MAC school) of the Association of American Universities, an association of the leading research universities in the US and Canada.

Back in a different era of college athletics- in other words, just a few years ago- Notre Dame was not considered a good fit for the Big 10 because of deficiencies in its research and graduate programs compared to other Big 10 schools. The Big 10 considered itself an academic conference in addition to an athletic conference.

Times change.

I was glad to see the University of Rochester come in at #47. Low profile school with great academics.

I keep thinking Cornell has lost ground nationally and to the other Ivies, but there it is at #10.
