Full Version: Argument Against Championship Games

I'm repeating the essentials of a post I just made on the C-USA Board.

If the proposed BCS system had been in place last year, it could have hurt the MAC since we have a championship game.

Both Miami and BG were nicely positioned in the BCS rankings going into the championship game, especially Miami. If there were no MACC game, Miami would probably have received a BCS Bowl bid (under the new system). But what if they would have lost the MACC game? Probably neither Miami or BG would have received a BCS Bowl bid. This means that Miami/MAC would have lost the 13-14 million payout from playing a BCS Bowl game.

In addition, if we are to believe todays Ft. Worth Star-Telegram article, the MAC and other current non-BCS conferences would have lost another 7 1/2% payout from the BCS Bowl pool.

To me, under the new BCS system, it seems there are solid reasons both for and against having a MACC game. I'm wondering--if the MAC does lose some of its members and thereby loses a MACC game, some people may not lose a lot of sleep over it. And there could be some benefits to a smaller number of conference members.

Right now, I'm hoping the MAC, 12 members and a championship game, stays the same. But then----
a Championship Game can work both ways. Some years it might be just enough to get a team into the BCS by winning and improving their ranking in the polls and sos. Some years it could hurt them if they lose the game. However, if they lose the championship game they probably don't really deserve a BCS bowl bid.
