From my sports/anti-trust expert Skip Oliva: Czabe, Today CVT released a policy paper on the subject of "Amateurism, Antitrust, and the NCAA." It's a bit dense, but it explains the philisophical principles underlying amateurism, and explains why reforming the NCAA is a lost cause at this time. Here's one piece of information from the report that might interest you: Under the antitrust laws, it's illegal for the sports leagues to negotiate single contracts with television networks. In 1960, Congress exempted the NFL, NHL, MLB, and NBA so they could negotiate such deals. But in the late 1960s, Congress passed an exception to the exemption: The NFL cannot broadcast games on Friday nights after 6 p.m. or Saturday afternoons from September to mid-December. The reason for this? The NCAA lobbied Congress to pass this rule to prevent ABC from moving forward with a proposal to create "Friday Night Football." The NCAA leaders were always adamant about limiting the spread of professional football on television, and they successfully argued before Congress that high school and college games would be unfairly impacted if the pro game aired on Fridays and Saturdays. The rule remains in effect, which is why you'll never see a Friday night regular season NFL telecast.
