Athletics funding has been cut for the last six years, Boeh said.
"Our institution, for whatever reason, over the last several years has simply not supported athletics the way our counterparts are in the Mid-American Conference," he said. "This is an attempt as part of these investments to get more funding to the coaches, to the student-athletes, so that we have a better, more level playing field when we try to compete with other programs."
Although Ohio University ranks second of 12 Mid-American Conference schools in total institutional spending, it sits at 10th in total athletics expenditures -12th per sport and per participant. It was those numbers that caught the attention of the Board of Trustees, President Robert Glidden said, when Boeh made a presentation in the fall about the overall performance of the athletics program.
"The Board expressed serious disappointment that we have not kept pace with other schools with whom we compete and indicated that we should correct the situation," Glidden said. "In fact, we are far enough behind in funding that they questioned whether $500,000 added to the budget was enough, but I felt that was the most we could do in one year and suggested that we should increase funding over a period of several years."
