For those who didn't already know, this incident happened in late June. The police have been puzzlingly slow in their investigation, although things have advanced a bit since the Michigan State Police joined the effort.
Basically, what's known is this: the victim and a friend exited Shaboom's, a bar near downtown Mt. Pleasant. Most reports I've heard stated that the victim's friend and he began picking a fight with the friend of a CMU player. Alcohol may have been (probably was, IMO) involved. There was a brief skirmish, during which the victim was knocked down but not seriously hurt. Then he got up, started to walk away...and all hell broke loose. A mob of unknown persons drove him to the ground and began punching and kicking him. He was taken to the hospital in a coma and died a couple weeks (I think) later from serious head trauma.
It is known that 11 CMU players have been questioned, along with at least 39 other individuals. Police have stated that they're still waiting for other potential witnesses to come forward, as between 70 and 100 people are thought to have been in the vicinity of the brawl. The police have their work cut out for them IMO, having to interview so many people...and let's not forget that this was at closing time for the bar, so many people were probably tired and/or in varying states of intoxication.
Quote:A spokesperson for Central Michigan University says an athlete can face dismissal from the school if charged and convicted.
Just thought I'd highlight that quote from the article. First of all, no CMU players have even been named as suspects by police. In point of fact, police are refusing to name
anyone as a suspect right now. However, coach Brian Kelly has already stated that
any player who is charged with a crime related to the beating death will be suspended from the team. Get that, Thunderstruck? CMU players have also been told by coaches that particular bar is now off-limits, and it's been made clear the coaches are disappointed players were there at closing time.
Oh, and for the record: I haven't been one of those ragging on Marshall for what happened in the Arden/Goddard incident. Nor do I intend to become one. CMU fans are hoping that
if any CMU players contributed to the death, they are charged before the season, so the rest of the team can get on with the business of football.
