CFN's new bowl predictions put NIU in GMAC bowl and BG in Motor City. Is this scenario even possible, I thought the GMAC would always take the MAC East champ. Could NIU be chosen at large, if bowl eligible, to play in GMAC if they didnt win MAC West?

ANY MAC team may be taken by these bowls, with the only real requirement that the winner of the MAC (the title game winner) MUST go bowling. After that, anyone could be taken.
I thought MAC winner goes to Motor City and GMAc takes another MAC team -- not necessarily a MAC east team.
Ahh ok I gotcha, so BG would have to win the MACC. I highly doubt the GMAC committee would take NIU in any scenario though, they are in love with Marshall after that 73-70 game or whatever the score was that one year.

I was curious does anyone know how many NIU fans made the trip out to Maryland, was it more or less than at Bama?
Looked about the same.

The GMAC bowl representative is usually picked before the MACC because the GMAC bowl is very early (I think it was Dec. 18 last year) relative to the MACC, which is usually held the first week in December. GMAC makes their invitation early because they want more than the 2-3 weeks between MACC and GMAC to market their bowl game. So, the GMAC bowl basically takes who they want before the MACC. Last year rumor had it that GMAC was going to invite NIU to the GMAC bowl immediately following the Toledo game had NIU been victorious and gone 10-1 at the time. Instead they lost and were 9-2, and the bowl invite ended up going to Toledo.

Anyway, once the GMAC bowl invites someone, there are two scenarios for the MCB - 1) the MACC winner already has accepted an invite to the GMAC bowl or 2) the MAC champion has not received a bowl invitation. For scenario 1, MCB can invite any bowl-eligible MAC school (not necessarily the MACC loser). For scenario 2, the MACC winner automatically recieves an invite to the MCB.
Not sure about the NIU getting choosen by GMAC part, but Toledo didn't go to a bowl last year. Miami went to the GMAC and BG went to the Motor City.
You're right - it was BG in the MCB and not Toledo.
Interesting MCB tidbit found in the USA Today CFB preview. Sorry if I'm repeating...
The Big East lost its Emerald (San Fran) Bowl bid to the Pac 10 and worked out an agreement with the MCB to send a bowl-eligible team to Detroit should the Big 10 not have enough eligibles.

That is an interesting pick. It would follow that since NIU is in the GMAC, they would most likely have to be chosen before the MAC Championship is played, which would have to mean NIU has an undefeated season in the MAC. This is further supported by the pick of BGSU in the Motor City Bowl. For two West teams to be chosen over the East division Champion, the West would have to prove itself to be a totally superior division to the East, so that would mean that both Marshall and Miami, OH, each suffer multiple MAC losses.

Of course, all this remains to be seen, and I would not put money on it at this time, but I hope CFN is right.
