The 15 minutes of fame the MAC had is gone. The MAC played terrible out of conference, not one win over a big name team or mid-maned team for that matter. Please don't count 1AA SIU.
Agree 100%.
Either last year was a huge fluke or people aren't taking the MAC for granted any more. I think it is the latter, but I expected a little better out of Toledo, Akron, and Miami. This really puts the conference races up for grabs. You may not be out of it with 2 losses. Amazing.
Last year the MAc was full of a lot of great veteran QB's. This year they are trying to fill those shoes and its early. The overall talent, outside of that position (a crucial one) hasn't changed much. The MAC will rise again.
Stellar day for the MAC.

Akron loses at home to Middle Tennessee.
Central Michigan loses by 17 to Michigan State.
Miami loses by 20 to Cincinnati.
Buffalo loses at home by 20 to Syracuse.
UCF loses by 25 to West Virginia.
Eastern Michigan loses by 39 to Florida.
Toledo loses by 49 to Kansas. Kansas?????
Ball State loses by 52 to Purdue.
Western Michigan loses by 63 to Virginia Tech.

U-G-L-Y.

In no way is there any shame beating SIU by 1 point. I had my doubts about SIU coming into this one, but if SIU was in the MAC, they would be the top 1 or 2 teams. They really are as good as advertised.d

I mostly agreee. Before the game i was warning others this wasnt going to be as easy as they expected.

HOWEVER

How can we expect to play better than our fellow MAC teams against large BCS teams if we can barely squeeze by a AA team?

niuguy, after seeing SIU today, i believe they are better than probably half the teams in the Big 12. Next week will be really interesting to see if NIU can remain competitive with an improving iowa state team.
i think ill have to wait and see. :)

Oh damnit, that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard, SIU can finish in the top half of the big 12?

Oklahoma
Texas
Kansas State
Nebraska
Oklahoma State
Mizzou
Colorado
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
Colorado
Kansas

All teams that would EASILY put a HURTING on SIU. Don't you read before you post? Baylor is the one team that i'm not SURE would beat SIU by A LOT.
Thanks for saving my time. The Big 12 is one of the best conferences in America.

NIU hasn't won a MAC title and we played with a QB starting his first game ever, SIU couldn't score a touchdown until 6 minutes left in the game and they are this awesome team.

Please, put you bong down!!!!
The Big 12 is horrendous this year
Oklahoma #2
Texas #8

They have 5 teams that are 2-0. Nebraska, Colorado, KState, OK State would all kill SIU. The only teams I see SIU beating are ISU and Baylor.

This does not mean that SIU sucks - they are a great team.
K-State and Missouri are horrible this year. K-state got manhandled by Fresno state today and Missouri lost to Troy state.
So much for optimism, you guys win, we suck, the year is over! You got me depressed now, off to bed.

Go Huskies.
I have not seen KState play this year but they have been a power over the last 6-7 years, but I still don't think SIU would beat them.

Troy is for real and you can't punish Mizzou for that loss. Troy beat Marshall and Mizzou and Marshall took OSU to the wire today.

Until I see SIU beat any good D1 team I don't thing they are in the top 50 like many have said.

yeah and fresno is a pushover

Maddawg don't do drugs!
Maybe Alum was right after all, maybe a crappy MAC IS where we belong and will always be. Since the MAC will be a 1AA conference soon, it is good to know we can compete against the top of Div 1AA. 04-drinky 03-banghead

I agree, the 15 minutes is up.

The MAC be down this year does not make me think NIU won't have a great season.

2003 was a once in a lifetime season for the MAC. That's not to say the MAC still isn't a quality mid-major conference.

A lot of people on this board need to face facts. NIU is what NIU is in the world of college football. In my book there is no shame with being a mid-major program. Are we or any of our MAC brothers ever going to become a perenially top 25 ranked program? Highly doubtful. Can we still become a respected and consistent winner that has the expectation of grabbing a bowl bid (albeit a pretty lousy one) nearly every year? Absolutely.

Let the national media go back to ignoring the MAC. They didn't really have their heart in following us in the first place. Guys like Trev Alberts and Craig James are the ones that look small for going "ha ha, told you so." To heck with them.
