Former Georgia Southern star dies at 41

March 10, 2004
STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) -- Vance Pike, a star on Georgia Southern's 1985 national champion football team and later an assistant coach, died Wednesday at age 41.

He died of a heart attack at his home in Marietta in suburban Atlanta, the university said.

Pike was the starting tackle on the Division I-AA championship team, which went 13-2 and beat Furman for the title. He played on the team for three years after transferring from Auburn in 1983.

Pike became an assistant coach in 1990, helping Georgia Southern win its fourth national championship. He also helped GSU to three playoff appearances and one Southern Conference title.

He is survived by his wife, Julie, stepson Tyler and two daughters, Keely Grace and Cece.
