Dear Dan,

Some of us pay good money to go to a university and some of us are rewarded for our athletic talent by having the rest of us pay for the education. While I have no problem with ball players getting scholarships I do have a problem when people say that I as a student have no right to rip the kid for a poor preformance and a poor representation of the university to which I belong. I don't know what sort of regime you are trying to start here but by closing a thread that rips a player for doing a ****** job but I think that is every student or alums right.

And in this rare case I have personal knowledge of horvath, ie, i've played with him on the field and it does seem as if he has not changed, be it from lack of experience or whatever, so why am I not allowed to say ****** about him.

All i ask that is if Phil the Thrill comes out and wow's the population with how poorly he throws that you allow another phil thread to be started. This is "our team" as fans and students and we have the right to comment on what is going on. If they don't like that they should stop charging us to watch them and fund their team.
As a moderator of this board, I will tell you it is OK to question how a player performed and so forth. However, this board will not tolerate personally attacking a student athlete like some have in that thread and I back HuskieDan's decision 100%!
When Phil signs a multi-million dollar contract, rip him all you want. Right now Phil is the best available quarterback we have and as a fan you should support the team. Notice how I didn't say support every individual on the team. How is ripping on how he plays going to do any good? I am sure that he realizes his play could use a lot of improvement and you are not the only one with this knowledge. He is still learning and gaining experience. We can't trade him for anyone else.

By the way Willy. I do enjoy reading your student perspective posts although I don't always agree with you. It seems that the students are really getting into the football team as indicated in your posts.
It is ok to criticize players, its just put some thought behind it when you do it, suggest possible solutions and what part of a player's game needs improvement. The problem with all this Horvath bashing is that everyone just says "He sucks" "He is a high school quarterback" It is sorta pointless dont you think? People indeed are acting like Horvath signed some multi-million contract and we are like some intoxicated NFL fans with nothing better to do it than insult our QB.

As do I. Say what you want about the pros, but student-athletes who are giving everything they have for their school and it's fans are a different matter.

Leave the nasty stuff and name-calling out of it.

I should hasten to add that I am very impressed with the thoughtfulness, intelligence, insight and tact of most of the posts coming from Crazywilly, and I think there are is a case to be made for being critical of players on these boards. However, theres a pretty fine line between intelligent criticism of a player and downright meanness, and I think some of the posts on the deleted thread crossed that line. All too often it seems the threads involving criticism of individual players degenerate and a certain piling on occurs.

My two cents. Now lets get back to bashing Omar Jacobs and the rest of the birdbrains.

:D

No but he did sign some scholarship papers...thats a lot of money every year. I can say this as a student, we support the team no matter what, but it gets hard when that team that represents us isn't the best it can be on the field. We have a quarter back that everyone and their mother can tell isn't really a D1 calibur player(fyi my mom watched the game on tv and when i called her she brought up the question as to 'why that boy from naperville can't play very well').

So the complaints are coming in about horvath on this board because it frustrates many of the students as to why a football team keeps putting him out there. IS he the best option? With 4INT's and 0 D1 wins we certianly hope not. It's qb choices like this that will have fans start to question the team and coaches and eventually lose faith and not care. It's more out of concern for the team than anything else we bash him, i remember my freshman year we opened the season against Wake forrest and got a win, with maybe 1000 students at the game, when i see sellouts like I do now I see how far it has come in my short time here, and it's a damn shame that a is going to blow this fan base we have.

So there, spelled out, the reasons as to why we bash horvath, the reasons the post keep coming, and the reasons we should be allowed to do it.

PS: One last comparison then i'll let this go till phil the thrill's next amazing preformance, if i pay for some of his education, which i do, i'm pissed if he doesn't live up to the standards that i feel he should meet in order for me to pay for his education. The same way my parents would be if they paid for my education and I didn't live up to their standards, I don't see the difference. hes 20-21, well so am i, and I know what i need to do, and i expect if I don't do it i will catch some backlash. Of couse mine won't be as well known because i'm not an athelete but that scholarship doesn't come free. So dan shutting down the ability for us to post about a player is just wrong, we are his peers and as his peers and the people he represents on the field i have the right to say what i feel. I will support the team, but if phil starts this whole season and we go 3-8 and lose fans i'll be mighty pissed off.

I respectfully disagree with Flying Corn, most of willy's comments are bashing sessions. Calling Horvath a retard is hardly thoughtful and intelligent.

Well here is an idea...Grab a dictionary and look up retard...Or wait here we go i'll do it for you buddy, "To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede."

Deep breath now maddawg, Vocabulary is more than just slurs you know? Sometime it's fun to look up words before you comment on them.

PS: Does this mean my posts are too intellegent for maddawg?

retard isn't name calling, i was saying, In maddawg form "Horvath really slows our offense down"

But i called it a 'retard qb' or a qb who slows us down.

Do u understand?
crazy willy, just dont get so emotional...its only the internet, and its only some bbs system. it dun mattah!

I don't much have a problem with basketball players, they are the best we could get which may not be very good, but they are judsons players, but football we have a lot of talent and horvath is blowing this season for a lot of people.
Crazywilly,
Did Horvath pick on you or beat you up in high school? It's one thing to be upset because of a bad game he had, but you've got a personal vendetta against him. Did he make some mistakes...yes. Is he the best available quarterback we have good or bad....yes. Maybe after graduation you can join Novak's staff and help recruit QB's for NIU. Until then....Lighten up Francis.
Dear Students,
Perhaps all students that receive grants, academic scholarships, etc should have their performances posted for all to review. We should be allowed to look at their test results and their papers. Than we should be allowed to post our comments such as "what a stupid answer!"; you are an idiot..your paper sucked... Better yet we could put cameras in the class rooms and we could watch you take your test. We could have a board where we can rip into students and their academic performance.

The point is that I am sure that there are students who fail to perform after receiving money from outside sources or from their parents. Unlike the non athlete student, student athletes have their performance examined in minute detail every day. Give them a @#$% break!!! Quit the name calling. Critique not critize. Learn the difference.

Maybe it's because in our culture no one really cares about the students, besides the students and the group that has a lot vested in them. As for atheletes they represent a larger group, alumni and students, so there is a large group that has an opinion about them, no one wants to be represented badly, or be made to look like fools. Ball players realize they represent a large group when they sign that scholarship offer, be it right or wrong that is how it is in todays culture. So do i have a right to say something about my peers? You bet I do, especially since i offer a little bit for their education and a little bit for their sport.

As most of you would agree we don't usually like people pissing away our money.

By the way,
The whole point of this thread was that dan shouldn't have closed down a thread because it was bashing a player. We have every right to say that his preformance sucked, and we can say it as often as we like because his preformance did indeed suck. It's kind of the same as saying a pro player is overpaid, some of us feel whatever his scholarship is worth is over paying horvath and that money could have been used better elsewhere. So I don't see how, no matter what is said about phil the thrill, a thread should be locked because a player sucked and people say it. ****** if getting good grades was a big deal and i preformed a physics lab for all to see and people paid to see me and i ******ed up, i should be made fun of, i should be told that I made a lot of mistakes and i'm not worth my scholarship to the physics department. But you know what, No one really cares about academics, no one pays to see me flip on a bunson burner, they pay to see phil preform.
I've said it repeatedly, and apparently I need to say it again - it has been established that bashing and ripping on student-athletes - those that receive a scholarship or those that do not - will not be tolerated.

You are allowed, and certainly expected, to comment critically about performances. I appreciate critical looks at performance, especially from those that know more about the game than the average schmo. But an attack is still an attack.

Willy - your weak explanation of how you used the word "retard" doesn't fly with me. You're using it simply to demean a student-athlete, knowing damn well that it has connotations other than your dictionary definition. If you want to call someone slow and impeding, find better words - get a bigger vocabulary.

You of all people should have some idea what kind of work is done by student athletes prior to and following competition. They are working for their tuition in much the same way that a bartender works to pay for his/her college. These kids are receiving a free tuition and housing because they are helping bring in a lot of money in the way of ticket sales, concessions, ad revenue and TV revenue, NOT because you chose to spend your time in DeKalb, and they spend a lot of time working for that.

It is increasingly obvious by some of your comments that you have an axe to grind both with Phil and with student-athletes in general. That is not a legitimate excuse to come here just to rip them. You've offered some good analysis of what is happening on the field and in the minds of some of the players, but you've also simply bashed certainly players. The former is perfectly fine, the latter is not acceptible.

Again - critical remarks are expected. Be intelligent about it - show us what you know, not how many insults you know. And remember - I'm not the only mod on this particular board, and rocketfootball has already chimed in with the same position.

RETARD BY DICTIONARY DEFINITION: "To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede."

In fact dan, retard have over 8 definitions with only 1 of them being slang, so maybe you should broaden you vocabulary? Learn that there is more to life than slang or slurs?

No dan it's not really an axe to grind with them, it's more with you, i don't see how anyone cannot say that someone sucked. Funny thing about your response is that student atheletes put in so much hard work, well what about regular students who work for their academic scholarship? Does that hard work not count? I'm a little confused about what you are saying, are you saying the students without an athletic gift don't work as hard? Because if that is what you are saying then maybe having you look up retard is the least of my worries.

I don't care which player it is, but if they don't live up to certian expectations of a scholarship people should have it be known. I'm glad that you support phil, indirectly i'm sure everyone does, we all support the team, but if another player has 4 Turnovers i'm sure everyone will rag on them too.

THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS THREAD IS THAT YOU SHOULD NOT CLOSE OFF A THREAD BECAUSE IT BUGS YOU THAT SOMEONE IS BEING MADE FUN OF! Personally i don't recall saying phil sucks, and not having any reasoning behind it, i say he sucks because of his poor decision making and the fact he 'retards' or slows down the offense and it's potential.

So please point out an example, w/post, of when i just bashed a player with no reason.
crazywilly Wrote:Maybe it's because in our culture no one really cares about the students, besides the students and the group that has a lot vested in them.
And you are attempting to change this by going hardline along the same course? Sounds like a pretty stupid strategy to me, but if you're all about claiming that society has made you this way, please continue to make excuses for YOUR behavior. I'll continue to blame the appropriate party for your actions - YOU.

Quote:So do i have a right to say something about my peers?  You bet I do, especially since i offer a little bit for their education and a little bit for their sport.

Willy - what exactly DO you offer for their education and their sport? Do you know what percentage of your tuition goes to fund scholarships? Do you pay this money yourself? If you work for this money, may we know where you work so we can come ridicule you?

Quote:As most of you would agree we don't usually like people pissing away our money.

IMO, players that aren't stars are not pissing scholarship money away.

Quote:By the way,

Tell us what wasn't good about it, not that it "sucked". Use your brain for once.

Quote:It's kind of the same as saying a pro player is overpaid, some of us feel whatever his scholarship is worth is over paying horvath and that money could have been used better elsewhere.

No, it's not. And how could it have been used better? On a kid that comes in overweight, doesn't want to work hard and flunks out of school?

Quote:So I don't see how, no matter what is said about phil the thrill, a thread should be locked because a player sucked and people say it.

I left it open for a few days and there were plenty of comments on it. It wasn't going anywhere. It's still there so you can go back and look at all your glorious comments.
