Well, we started slow, but a big turning point was when we fumbled the ball in our own end and the defense held Temple to a field goal. That made it 10-0. Then the offense got a nice drive and the crowd got into it and helped the defense made a big stop. In fact, the defense stopped the Temple offense on 5 straight drives. I believe they ended the game with 8 stops on Temple's last 9 drives.

No doubt in my mind, that the defense fed off the crowd and once that happened they started to gel. Our rush defense was really good from the 2nd quarter on. The pass defense wasn't as good, but Temple's QB overthrew receivers a lot during the game. I think it was because the defensive line stepped up and got a lot of pressure on the QB in the game. We did a lot of blitzing too and played a lot of 3 man front's instead of 4 man front's. I believe Amstutz had a hand in these changes.

Temple had just 354 yards in total offense. Just 152 yards rushing (3.8 ypc) and 205 yards passing. Temple QB Walter Washing had 119 yards rushing and over 270 yards passing against Maryland last week. Tonight he had just 67 yards rushing and 205 yards passing against our defense.

Gradkowski looked really good. He was 22 of 28 for 267 yards and 2 TD's against no INT's.

Now let's get revenge on Ball State next week!!!
i think i saw more hits on the qb in that game than i have in the last 2 years.
One more thing. Temple had about 4 or 5 personal fouls, maybe even 6. They seemed to look very frustrated and were constantly pushing or hitting someone about 2 seconds after the whistle blew.

Yeah, I agree.
One last thing. Toledo unveiled a new tradition tonight, the Victory Bell. Yes, we still shoot the cannon off, but we now ring a victory bell as well. They said that it will be used at home games for now on.

It was kind of cool.
RF... if memory serves me correctly... the cannon was shot off due to one frat... and that was tradition... do you know who is responsible for the victory bell?

in other words. there is history behind the cannon... so what reasoning is behind the bell?

(btw... i really like your explanations.... they are very well thought out... tells me that a rocket education is best!!!)
i will ask around... i think the victory bell has been ringing for some time... or maybe it is the ringing in my head... besides the voices.... but, the bell has been around for a while... still RF.. explain please???

This was the first time the victory bell was used. They unveiled it before the game. They mentioned the Frat that donated the bell during the unveiling ceremony, but the name escapes me right now. Maybe someone else remembers?

And yes, the cannon is still shot off by a certain fraternity that introduced it.

Could you be thinking of the Peace Pipe award that goes to the winner of the UT/BG football game every year?
ok... i think the bell was intorduced with Rocky... the Amazing condom rocket!!! the "NON Threatening" Rocket!!!

Not sure how drunk you are, but tonight was the first night for the victory bell. We may have had some kind of bell in the past, but I don't remember it and it wasn't anytime recent.
Well here's my random thoughts from the game, some of which have already been hit on:

1. Defense certainly did look better. It helped that Temple didn't have much of a passig game, but improvement is improvement. Glad to see the zone blitz being utilized in the second half.

2. Offense recovered nicely from a slow start. Running game seems much more effective when they use Scooter or one of the tight ends as a lead blocker. Wish they'd have thrown even more deep balls, even though Bruce missed on those back-to-back bombs, because Temple was giving them one-on-one coverage most of the time.

3. How about that Jason Robbins? Who'd have thought he could hit something outside of 30 yards? My only real complaint on special teams was that total brain-fart by Body and company on the kickoff that Temple recovered.

4. What's up with the new stadium announcer? Somebody at least needs to teach this guy how to say "good enough for another Rocket first down." I've also got the BCSN replay on right now, and it's pretty bad coverage. So much better being at the games in the crowd 04-rock

5. Anybody else see those retards dancing on top of a van in Lot 10? One of the hilights of the tailgate party.

6. No re-entry now?! What's the stupid logic behind that new rule? How are we supposed to party at half-time?

I think you probably answered your own question. I imagine that the intent is to keep everyone from going out at the half to get further drunked up, then come back in and maybe end up in trouble.

Although the majority may drink responsibly, there is a significant minority that ruin it for everyone. Visiting fans should not be harassed by a bunch of drunks (or anyone for that matter, but these ******holes are almost always drunk---not a coincidence I think). Of this years road games the drunk trouble makers were found at both Minnesota and Kansas but not at Eastern.

I actually enjoyed the Eastern game as I did not encounter a single drunk---of course they didn't have that many fans to begin with, but the ones that were there were very well behaved--even cordial and friendly (just like the sober Minnesota fans).

On one hand, I am suprised that Eastern would have enacted such a harsh rule (given the "bad for business" argument---think Toledo bar owners vs. smoking ban) but on the other hand, given the legal liabilities these days, I am actually suprised that even more do not crack down.

Over the past four years, how many football player problems have had alcohol as the root source of the problem? The players are probably a reasonable reflection of the entire student body---it is that just when they screw up it is front-page news.

I am amazed at the extent to which alcohol abuse is tolerated by society with a joke or a wink or even venerated and extolled; however, it took 40 years and a lot of financial incentives to make cigarettes socially unacceptable, so I don't hold out much promise for signifcant abatement in alcohol abuse anytime soon.
you can't leave at half time? what a bunch of BS!!! I'll bet it is the stupid f-ing idiot prez made that rule... he is intent on ruining UT and UT athletics... I think he should be fired immediately!!! that just pisses me off... what is the point of going to the game when you have to sit there during halftime? i think someone needs to say something... anyone here agree?

Well said, T-Town. Another case of the few ruining it for the many, but I have seen some folks wander in mid-third quarter completely looped. Two guys in particular that always sat right behind us would come back in and make complete asses of themselves. They would babble on and on about how Toledo wasn't running the no-huddle correctly because they took so long to get a play off at times. They also loudly demanded blitzes on every play. No matter how many times small children and little old ladies explained the difference between the no-huddle and the hurry-up to them, they just never seemed to get it. If guys like that could annoy an entire section of Rocket fans, I can only imagine what a few similarly impaired individuals would be like behind the visitor's section.

WE ARE NOT Marshall!
The no reentry rule is actually something that many Universities have been doing for a while and Toledo decided to set this rule for this fall. It is a good idea.
It was great to see the Rockets kick butt at home again.
Defense looks much improved, looked better then Maryland against Temple.

I am a little concerned about the cannon operators though. After a touchdown, they lit it, and it did not go off, then the chearleaders who just finished their pushups ran right in front of it, that could have been ugly had the cannon decided to go off then.

I agree!!! I miss the whole "good enough for a ROCKET first down!" instead of an unethusiastic "first down toledo" the people around us all commented that it sounded like an announcer from some unbiased school doing the announcements. Escpecially when he couldn't get Gradkowski right and then corrected himself.... I hope he practices for next week!
1. I go to football games to be drunk and obnoxious...

2. I can't believe you pantyweights... ok, you got the no smoking in Toledo... now you want to make sure no one gets drunk... does the word Puritans ring a bell? next thign you know... y'all want to have a dress code...

3. 1st amendment is freedom of speech... if the idiots want to make an azz of themselves they should be able to... as long as they aint spillin beer all over ya... sounds to me like they were having fun... Rocket One... you should have turned around and asked the gentleman why they would want the blitz and engauge them in a philisophical conversation...

4. One of the great things about UT football was that you were able to bring in a large cup of beer... then at halftime, go out... fill the cup full of the golden juice and come back in...
Beer and/or Wine Coolers = More fans... like i said and have been shouting is that... if you want to improve enrollment and improve enthusiasm for the football program... SELL BEER!!!

if you want to increase revenue... SELL BEER...

it is not a tough concept... the Prez is an liberal IDIOT... not a personal attack.. just an observation  03-pissed 03-banghead
