Figuratively speaking, of course. :D Well, it's that time of year again, when the Bee Gees and the CEs get together for what always turns out to be an entertaining encounter. This is always a fun game, and this year will be no exception. The Bee Gee fans are fun to party with, and it's too bad someone has to lose this game. While the Bee Gees are clearly the favorite to win, I hope you enjoy watching our candidate for the HEIGHTman Trophy Award, Jerry Seymour. He has moves like a mini-me Barry Sanders. He uses his non-ball-carrying arm like a third leg. Really, he's something to watch. He'll run into a pile of bubs when it looks like a rugby match, and suddenly, out of the pack comes the water beetle! Bob Marley would love this kid, Dreadlocks and all! Have fun in MP, Bee Gees. You're always welcome in the casino city! Check out the height and weight of our punter (fat and runs, oh no!).
I attended the Fat Punter Fiasco and would love to know who else was there from this board.

One thing I recall is looking across at the CMU fans. There were a lot of them and they were loud as hell.

The other thing I recall is the thing I wish I couldn't: The sight of that waddling goober running free. 10 years later, and he's still running. He's probably made it to Findlay by now.

What a game.
MacLord - I was at that game as well. My freshman year at BG and my only memory from that entire season is that dude running down the sideline. I was sitting in the southwest corner and he was running right at us. All I could think is "how can someone not tackle this guy." I'd be surprised if he would have made it to Wooster St had he kept going. That was probably the furthest he had ever run at one time.
LOFL! Great responses, guys! The Fat Punter (Craig Fischer), now makes "Whoper-Head" commercials for Burger King. :D This year's "Fat Punter," Tony Mikulec, is 5'10" and 223 lbs! Look out!
Which Whopperhead is he? Geeze, I quit McDonald's, now I gotta swear off Burger King?

To illustrate to younger folk how far the MAC has come, BG had only lost one game that year, a close one to NC State in their first game of the season, and when they met up with CMU in their last game, it was winner-take-all for the MAC crown. Was this game televised by ESPN? Not a chance.

I was there.

Come to think of it, this is the 10th anniversary, isn't it?

Since I'm in a good mood, I have a confession to make, ten years later:

When the ball was snapped, I bent down to find a safe place for my not-so-soft drink. The crowd went nuts. So I looked up -- but it was chaos on the field, and I just couldn't figure out who had the ball or what was going on. By the time I put it all together, (about two minutes later), Craig Fischer was in the end zone.

In other words, I was there, but I didn't actually see it. Not really.
Makes sense. I mean, CMU had been ahead on some fluke scores and long TD runs but BG had come back, now had all the momentum and had forced the punt. It was just a matter of time. You figured, I'll set this "Pepsi" down, and get settled in for the BG scoring drive...

The fact is, most of us watching didn't see HOW it happened. There was a long moment where everyone was watching the BG player waiting for him to field the punt, then people are looking around at each other, like 'What is happening?' Then, the total shock that not only did the fattest guy on the field have the ball, he was somehow so far downfield, that nobody was going to catch him, and all that was left to do was watch him huff and puff for twenty more yards or so.

I think anyone at that game would agree that if CMU had punted, they were going to lose.

To continue the excitement, BG actually came back and threw a bomb for a TD with under a minute to go, and had a chance at an onsides kick, which they did not recover.
Two other CMU-BG memorable games (both played in MP) was where Martin Bayless (that motherphucker-I mean that in a good sense), intercepted a CMU pass in the end zone to preserve a last-minute-loss by CMU (actually, our QB either didn't see him, or the receiver ran the wrong route, chrissakes it was obvious Bayless had him covered). The other was in 1978, I believe, when CMU and BG were on ESPN, and Mark Miller (BG's QB) was named player of the game by phuckphace Corso, before CMU came back from 3? touchdowns to win the game with 18 seconds. Our QB (Ron Rummel) said he got hit so phucking hard that he didn't see the catch for the winning TD. Well, Ron, the rest of us saw it, and it was even more entertaining to watch Corso eat crowsh!t! :D

I'm told Bayless was funny like that. He had like 27 career interceptions. No one else in MAC history has ever broken 20, I don't think.

Are you sure it was an ESPN game? (Or, for that matter, *was* there an ESPN in '78?)

Wasn't it a CBS game?
I believe ESPN started in 1979 so I think Schadenfruede is right that it was on CBS.
someone say dreadlocks?

Ah yes, that was my senior year at CMU.

Actually, that was when ABC had exclusivity over college football. I believe the contract between ABC and NCAA required showing one MAC game on a regional basis over a three year period.

Well, it was getting toward the end of the season and ABC decided to show BGSU (with ex-Michigan State coach Dennie Stoltz) at CMU. Initially the game was only going to be shown in Flint. Michigan and Lima, Ohio. In a rare pro-CMU, pro-MAC editorial, the Detroit Free Press slammed ABC, causing the network now only to show the game in the Motor City, but Cleveland as well.

The game was a smashing success on TV and resulted in the MAC getting several regional broadcasts over the next few years. Then the Univ. of Oklahoma and Univ. of Georgia won their lawsuit against the NCAA, allowing individual schools and/or conferences to negotiate television contracts. It was at that time the MAC lost TV time and not surprisingly seemed to lose a lot of momentum it had gained the prior years before.

Wow. What a story! Lima and Flint?

If Central Michigan wins a game only on television in Lima and Flint, does it still count in the standings? :)
You guys are right (my bad), it was ABC (not ESPN). I remembered it right after I wrote and submitted. That's what happens when you retire early; half the money, twice the spouse! :D
Hey CE, would you happen to have a picture or some audio of this play that the punter was in? I am just curious. Got a pretty good chuckle out of this thread. I can vouch for your little waterbug. I was at Waldo when the Chips came in last year and was amazed at what this guy could do. A friend and I were saying thru the whole game, just hit him. I think he even went under Babin once. 03-lol

Dear B.S. (of course it's "BROwNCOw Sh!t :D ):

The only video I saw of the play even faked out the camera man. All you could see was the players going down the field as if it were an actual punt. Little did anyone know, Fischer, on his own volition, took off with the rest of the players (the camera was focussed on the BG return man). By the time the camera adjusted, Fischer was in the end zone, and the camera immediately panned to the CMU sideline, which of course, was going nuts! 04-rock Both sides of the field were stunned, as if to say: "What the phuck just happened?!"
CE, you sure are a smart one. I never intended the initials of my name to be BS but it kinda does fit. And with how my Broncos are playing this year the BS fits their play. After your description of the play, it seems like a " priceless" commericial could have been made out of it.

Guess it was destiny. In 1978 Saturdays meant Ga Championship Wrestling for me though.
