Toledo was just added at number 6 - They are impressed with the 50 PPG.

<a href='http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/powerranking?season=2004&pollId=2' target='_blank'>ESPN Six Pack</a> :crying:
It is simple really. Over the next several weeks, between ESPN and ESPN2 Toledo is scheduled to appear on their network against: 1) Ohio, 2) Miami, 3) NIU and 4) BG.

ESPN is just doing some good marketing in hyping the Rockets----why not try to whip up a little interest in the Rockets who have 4 upcoming games on their network? After all, their future advertising revenue is likely to depend on their viewer ratings. Clever, those TV execs, eh?
Let's go Ohio, Miami, and BG!!!!!!!!

Let me be brutally honest, I do not like our chances against Toledo on November 9th. That monster offense of theirs scares the daylights out of me. The strengths of our defense do not match up well at all. Plus, NIU doesn't have the type of passing attack that will be able to get into a pinball scoring match with them.

Our entire season will hinge on the outcome of November 9th's contest.

Our entire doesn't hinge on the 11-9 meeting if we lose every other game.

Alum, now you got me all depressed! I thought we had a chance against Toledo - just like we had a chance against Bowling Green. Now you ruined my day! I'm running out right now to my favorite drug dealer for some arsenic and hemlock. Quick! Somebody please cheer me up before I end it all!! :crying:

Dog Fan:

I have no right to be so negative. Having said that, the more I get to understand the 2004 version of the Rockets the more I am freakin out. Right now I see worrisome matchup problems.

It is reasonable to forecast that the post season hopes of the loser of the NIU versus Toledo contest will essentially be extinguished. Please make me feel better oh wise and peverted one.

Seriously...what makes you bullish about this upcoming contest?
I can make you feel better, but it involves hands-on therapy with imported fragrant oils. Interested?

I happen to agree with you, to a point. It will most likely be winner take all on November 9. Toledo will be a tougher game than BG, but we can win it - and we should. Do you think the Huskies won't come out firing on all cylinders? Have some faith and drink a glass of warm prune juice to purge yourself of all that negativity. Go outside, look at the sunshine (?), and take a deep breath of fresh air (??).

GO HUSKIES!

P.S. If you're the religious sort, it doesn't hurt to pray for a defeat of Toledo at the hands of the Bobcats, Red Hawks, and/or Falcons!

I too hope Bowling Green or Miami knocks off Toledo, but I'm not counting on it. While it is foolish exercise to look beyond the next opponent on the schedule, I still think the November 9th game will be for all the marbles.

I'll say this. If NIU is to win this game, Josh Haldi and the receiving corp will need to have the game of their life because I don't think we will be afforded the luxury of grinding it out in typical Joe Novak style. Abysmal weather conditions on the 9th would be an absolute godsend for the Huskies. Does anybody have the number for Tommy Skillethead?
For Huskies 2b champs , UT would need 2 loses in all likelihood -- if they beat NIU.

Don't count on outside help - altho its not out of the realm of possibility.

We simply have not defended well vr. UT since returning to MAC and that IS worrisome.

UT totals since1997 : 41, 16, 44, 38, 41, 33, and last year's travesty.

Any UT points greater than 30 greatly reduces our chances IMO.

If D truly does win championships, Huskies must play a near perfect game on both sides of ball. Control clock. no gimmes. no blown assigments... no missed tackles . no blocked punts....etc

It all sounds so simple - and obvious.

If we play bend- no break D and give up underneath stuff to prevent long/quick scores , UT will again nickel and dime us down the field, wear down the D until they break a few long ones. UT O will need to be kept guessing on coverages...blitzing etc. A busted play for a big gainer for UT , a key sack for NIU etc may become the difference maker late in final quarter.

JoeN oftentimes sez he is the position worry coach. It' s easy to see why in this matchup.

We have the speed on defense to slow them down, if we gameplan properly. They'll get their points, but if we make them earn them, and don't get burned by the big play ala 2002 and 2003, we'll win this game.

We don't know need a Texas Tech type passing game to score the points necessary to beat them. We can, and will, score with a balanced attack, including special teams.

UT is on the mid-major six-pack because they are on ESPN several times the next few weeks.

I'll tell you what we need to do, cut out these bulljive turnovers. What do we average 50 a game! I swear we cut those out we beat everyone by a good margin.
1. You guys are really obsessed with Toledo... Ummmm... WMU will beat you, that is my prediction...

2. Series Stats: Toledo Rockets 12 vs Smelly Dogs 0  yeah, you give Toledo a good game, but we schedule y'all for the 'W'

If you say smelly dogs once more..........

I will admit there is a preoccupation with Toledo, that Toledo fans don't seem to share toward NIU. Given the history its only normal for this to be one sided. I really think Coach Novak is obsessed with Toledo also and can't blame him because it is the only obstacle to get where we want to go.

This year I think NIU does have a better team than the Rockets, and I really think the home crowd is going to be an unbelievable force in the game Nov 9th, I'm hoping the loudest and most boisterous crowd in NIU history, because after all it does appear like it will be the biggest game in the history of NIU football to date.
"yeah, you give Toledo a good game, but we schedule y'all for the 'W' "

Last time I checked, NIU and Toledo are in the same division. Y'all don't "Schedule" us.
Can NIU beat Toledo this year? YES. Will they? I don't know, but I like Toledo's chances. I have followed Toledo for a very long time and I really think this is our best offense we have ever had. The defense reminds me of the D's from 2001 and 2002. They have really improved against the run, but you can throw the ball downfield against us. However, we do have some skill in the secondary and throwing too many deep balls will result in INT's for our defense. As bad as our defense has been, we are actually +3 in turnover margin now. After the Kansas game I think we were -7 in turnover margin, so we have been a +10 in the last 4 games. If that is not a sign that our defense is better than I don't know what is.
